Santa Fe had some of those, too, I believe.

Illinois Railway Museum still has a caboose of that design and road name, so not only did it exist, it still does.

I thought the NW had some from the Wabash Railroad.

Not sure where I first heard it, but I've always known those as "wabash cabooses"

Doesn't look like Tyco to me. More resembles the HO caboose commonly found in Bachmann train sets.

Also note that Great Northern used streamlined cabooses, but they were somewhat different visually.http://www.trainweb.org/nwrp/gn/gnx3-1.jpg
The common Tyco streamlined caboose appears to be based off of a style of caboose used by the Pennsylvania Railroad, except that Tyco moved the cupola off center

theres one of them BN streamlined ex-CB&Q cabooses here at a museum
Anytime you sees them streamlined cabooses in BN its obviously a ex-CB&Q Always hated those off center cupolas running that way To me it looks backwards BUT I know they ran them that way

There is an even closer prototype, which is the PRR N8:
http://berwickrailfan.webs.com/caboosephotos/PRR478044B.jpg
The N8 has the recessed end platforms with shields, and looks almost exactly like the Tyco caboose with a centered cupola and four equal sized windows. It was introduced in 1950, and I think the Tyco version came seven years later, which would seem to make the offset cupola a deliberate and mind-boggling design choice.
Why Tyco did it, I don't know. It isn't the only time they genericized a specific prototype. The Shifter is basically a PRR A5 with the Pennsy details replaced with generic ones, but the one weird change to the caboose doesn't really make it any less distinctively Pennsy...

WR and Autobus - great posts, it seems so obvious what Tyco did now - but I was never aware of it before. Makes me want to kitbash a couple of Tyco cabooses into the original prototype design.

I've seen something similar done by cutting out the cupola and center section of the roof as a unit and flipping it around to center the cupola, but that doesn't address the window arrangement or the length difference.

You could just use the one from life like that is a dead ringer, there is one of these that is stuffed and mounted at a city park in St. Charles Mo. in full Wabash colors. I will see if I have some pics.In the meantime here are a couple of cabooses I have modified. The Conrail one is made from two Tyco cars. The C&EI car is a stock Life Like with a repaint. C&EI actually did have a couple of these but they never made it to the Mopac paint scheme. After the merger the cars had there copulas removed and replaced with run of the mill square Magor type copulas before entering the pool on the Mopac. I just wanted one in the post merger scheme with the more stylish copula.

You're right, JNXT. Tyco should've made their caboose like this to begin with. With less detail, of course.

JNXT:
ICG actually picked up some of the PRR N8s and repainted them. The price must have been right, because nothing I have ever heard about PRR caboose comfort or PRR caboose maintenance has been complimentary.
The scheme isn't quite like the Tyco ICG caboose, it was plain orange with the large 'i' graphic and regular non-condensed black lettering...but it still looks very Tyco to see ICG paint on a Pennsy car. :)

Painful as they were, they make that caboose. I always thought those big gaping unglazed windows in the Tyco streamlined caboose condemned it to looking toy-like. Now that you glazed them, though, that caboose looks like the real thing.

Even MORE Tyco style cabooses, these were once part of the Ann Arbor RR
Just click on the blue numbers on the far left of your screen to see the photos. #1 does not work for whatever reason #2 , 3 , 4 are of older wooden cabooseses
#5 thru 18 are the Tyco styles ! Enjoy

You know it's almost as if a perfect kitbash would be the Tyco cupola on top of the Bachmann caboose.

| Bowser is re-issuing the same caboose they initially offered as a kit a few years ago; I still have a PRR one in my inventory. They weren't cheap, about $30, and the assembled ones will probably sell for about that, but they look super nice.
