In March 2013 I bought my first piece of "brass", Ha!. I got this Mantua caboose and I was in hog heaven thinking I'd gotten something like the "big boys" have for a bargain because it was an old beat up Mantua caboose.

I promptly cleaned it up the best I could. It was missing a couple things like the short piece of roof walk and the marker lights, etc. But, I pretty much dug it and it got me started on gathering a consist of these Mantua cars.

Since the time of that first Mantua Metal Products car, I've messed with a few of them. Initially, my plan was to just have a natural (unpainted; maybe dull coated) brass and diecast consist of these cars. Then one thing led to another and I started painting a bit here and there.
So recently I got this hair to get after the caboose . . .

Hi Barry,
Nice choice! I may have an extra roof walk section. I'll have to look. I kinda like the Mantua 8-whl cabose and was always surprised at theire cheap selling prices. You can usually snag one for less than $15 including s/h. The 4-whl bobbers tend to do a little better at ~ $25.
Send me a note and let me know if you need it.

Yeah, man. Some of the prices they sell for on EBay are way too cheap for what they actually are. Seriously come on, they are made of mostly made of brass which instantly brings the price up dramatically. Let alone the condition and if it even has the box. The prices are sweet for us, but it sucks for the sellers after they find the actual value of them.

Digging the classic caboose, Barry. How about Mantua's brass boxcars and reefers? Lord knows there's plenty of those somewhere around here. I'd dig them out but I'm busy cleaning Silver Streak reefers...

quote: That looks almost like how it did in Mantua's advertisements for this thing back in the day. Maybe even a little bit better. Seriously though, good job on the paint job.
