I have a model power 0-4-0 which runs great, but has a cheap plastic shell and cylinder assembly. Since the shell appears to be identical to the Mantua 0-4-0 booster, I was wondering if a Mantua metal shell could be transplanted onto the Model Power frame without major modification. This might also help to slow it down a little bit, because at top speed it goes fast enough to fly off the track! Thanks, ChessieRR

Ah, yes. Those things are known to fly down the tracks. Believe me, I've seen them. They almost hit warp speed.

Not sure if possible without major work. They're high geared and under weighed. Different gears require some special tools and work. In other words, add some lead where ever and keep as is and save up for a Mantua tank engine. They're cheap and common.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look for a Mantua tank engine, they actually don't seem much more expensive than their model power counterpart.

I know nothing about the Model Power 0-4-0. Is it a pancake style motor or open frame motor like the old Mantua steamers? If it's open frame and has an exposed worm, you could possibly replace it with a single lead worm. This will cut in half the top speed of the loco.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

So far, only full-size Heislers are capable of making the jump to warp speed:

This may not be possible without extensive rework. I believe the Model Power chassis has kind of a square diecast brick shape that fits in the hollow plastic boiler, but the Mantua body is only hollowed out enough for the angled open frame motor and worm. It will likely take a LOT of milling to get the metal body to fit the MP chassis.

You might be able to find a slower aftermarket motor. The MP motor is pretty fat and the chassis has a lot of room, if I remember correctly.
