Only $7,500 ! He had this listed before, I wonder why there were no takers? He even wants $10.95 for shipping. I would love to have what he is smoking.

I believe someone posted that a while back in the crazy prices thread. Not surprised. That thing is the definition of that thread it appeared in.

It's a little different from the average Mike, though, being the catalog model (i am assuming that the seller has a true provenance for its origin). I don't think it's worth $7500, but I don't really know how much it would be worth. Probably more than $100, probably less than $1000. I don't know enough about the market for Mantua prototypes and catalog pieces.
The real cutaway catalog model is certainly unique and unusual. But this isn't an unproduced item, nor is it from the last catalog...just from a late one. The last few years of Mantua were a sad time, so the associations of this artifact aren't wholly positive. All of this would tend to cut down the number of people who might want this. With that said, I wouldn't mind owning it, but I wouldn't pay a lot.

This falls under the category "it's worth what someone will pay for it". Certainly unique, and historical...and quite interesting. I wouldn't mind having it either but not at anywhere near the asking price. For that matter, not even at $75.

I would not be surprised if it did sell for $1,000 or more, but I do not see it ever coming near $7,500.
Penn Line Crusaders are far more common than this and they are rare. They fetch $1,000 to $1,300 when in great shape all the time. I would not be surprised if this went double that to the right person!
Problem I see is... This is not vintage and therefore does not have the following something like the Crusader has.

Exactly Sean. Just because it was owned by a guy who worked at Mantua and had a section cut off for a catalog shoot does not make it "desirable" or collectible - at least not to me. I am a sucker for nostalgia and if I did not have other priorities I would search and buy a Crusader or a TYCO T-10 set. Now if an early Mikado / Pacific that was owned and built by John Tyler himself were to come up at auction...........................

Key words are "to the right person". A Mantua collector who already has everything + plus lots of disposable income.

Yeah, definitely. That would be pretty dang cool if a Mantua built by John Tyler himself showing up on EBay would be pretty cool.

quote: What?! Why would anyone for that matter sell a building kit that's probably not that rare for over $200 with shipping?I can maybe understand $100 but this is just outrageous.Ah, EBay. Well, at least it's not as outrageous as that Mikado, I mean, come on.

Still for sale (shocking). He is offering to let it go for 6 $1200 monthly payments. Too funny.

I wonder if he did that, so the buyer could hide the purchase from their spouse?

Apparently he believes the issue is coming up with the money, not the fact that it ain't worth it.
