My Jerry's junk box pic this week is part of the old Life Like spotlight rail car. I have noticed this piece is dirty, but not broken or damaged. This is a part of my original 1970s layout car. I have since bought a nice boxed one to replace it...

Nice car, Walt! Definitely savable. My Junkbox special this week is a rescued track cleaner, bought at the Carlisle auto flea Friday for $3. Missing trucks, but easily remedied. I have a "thing" for track cleaners, I guess, and I am pretty sure I don't have this one yet. It won't be "junk" long, I'll get some trucks on it and have it "cleaned up" in no time.

Here's my $5 box o' junk from today's New Hope area train show.

Lots of goodies in here, including brass details, Rivarossi parts and the Bowser trolley gearing I bought it for.

Jerry, I like that car just in and of itself!
Here's my JOTW, a Timken Roller Freight boxcar. It's missing one truck, one wheelset from the other truck, and all the corner steps. It has some scuffs and scratches too.

My JOTW offering is a pile of Mantua Vintage Mantua 1950's 0-4-0 Reading style Goat Brass & Diecast Locomotives. The lot has since multiplied. Not sure now exactly how many I have....

That's a lot of camelbacks you've got there. Why would you consider them junk? A lot of them actually look very usable.

This may become my favorite recurring thread! Sometimes it's the inventiveness of it all.
I don't have a picture of it, but one of the few thiings not stolen in the robbery two years ago was my original Jell-O car. It's missing steps and such, and has been there and back. It's going to keep a place on my layout in one of the corners as a wreck, "down the hill." I'm even going to find some of the same color steps and glue them down, and it will be overgrown with brush, fading into the walls.
I also have the original motor out of my Rock Island loco. It will be on display in the Engine Shop, peeking out somewhere.
It's because of some of these things that I am going to do a complete catalog with back story on every piece in my layout. Every car, every house, every detail, so that if you come over for a visit, you can read up on the history of each item. Plus I'll have it all up on my website, too!
Starting my Tyco and other favorites collection over again after 37 years. My still in progress list of inventory and wantlist: tyconut.com

Yes, folks, the title has been officially changed, thanks in part to some valuable input, so it's no longer " Junk of the Week ", it's " Junkbox of the Week ", thereby not relegating the posted item to BE the junk itself. Because some of these shabby items look like they can still be used in some creative scenic capacity. I think this is a fun recurring thread myself, because it gets stuff normally not considered to be premium layout material out of the shadows, and also gets the owner to reconsider what the item could be used for in the future. Unless the item is totally smashed flat and in pieces, there's always hope that some part of an item can be turned into something useful on a layout. Otherwise it'd be in the trash already, and NOT in your junkbox! I still cringe at my train club buddy, who had a TREMENDOUS stash of HO items in his shop, he'd just dump them out harshly and rummage mercilessly through the pile when looking for something. I bought quite a bit of stuff, from incomplete engines to shells of rolling stock and engines, and have rebuilt some of the rarer ones into running units. I got an AHM Chessie 4-6-2 steam shell from him one time, and another I got 3 steam engine chasisis's, and later realized they were the 4-6-2's I needed for the Chessie shell! I took parts off all 3 and got one complete engine out of it. I told him later he shouldn't be so rough on his junkbox collection, he just laughed. he's since sold off his entire junkboxs of stuff, and is out of the train repair business mostly, he just does scenic work on layouts for those who can't do it themselves. I miss rummaging through HIS junkboxes, . Those were the days....

That's almost what I was thinking about those camelbacks. Heck, you can even look at my quote to find out how I feel about that sort of stuff.

Hi Steven, You can often find a lot of treasures in a pile of "Junk". I don't necessarily consider any of them to be junk, but nearly every one needs to be restored and to most people that would be junk and would be resigned to a siding or the scrap yard. I would like to think that someday I will have time to restore most, if not all of them. It's funny though as this photo is about three years old. I probably have accumulated enough to almost double this pile by now. Just no recent pics of them.

You don't know how many you have? I have one simple answer... You have ONE... ONE HERD OF GOATS.
did I mention that you have a big herd?
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

| "Herd" . . . mmmhh? I'm wondering . . . you get a passel of pigs, a gaggle of geese, a parliament of owls, . . . locomotives? What should it be? If you keep locomotives in your "lair", then . . . ?
