** Pulling and Quartering **
* Most importantly is giving a good look over to the locomotive you are working on.
See if one side is insulated and which it is. How is the left side factory quartered in reference to the right side. You reference to the wheel turning in the forward direction. Mantua and tyco quarter there locos with the right side lagging by 90 degrees. Their right side is also the locomotive electrical pickup side.

* I'll start with a photo of the tools I use.

* What you see here is upper left NWSL quartering tool, NWSL pulling tool, below is a vice clamp, then a small gear puller.

* Second photo is NWSL puller set to pull solid pick up wheel from axel. If I have a choice I leave on the insulated wheel. It is a personal preference.

* Photo 5 is starting to replace the wheel. a little push put it all together and still leaves it loss enough to adjust the angle of quartering. You can see in this photo that the axel wheels are not in gauge. you can also see the quartering tool there .

Last a photo looking down on the wheel set in the quartering tool. Remember the long screw is in the insulated wheel, it is on the left side.

I hope all this helps.

Nice tutorial, Frank. Where did you find that steel puller? It looks like it may have some age on it. Most pullers on the market (aside from NWSL) can't remove anything larger than small gears.

Hi toptrain,

Great tutorial!

Now, I'm not really a steam engine kind of guy, but I do have some.

I am wondering what kind of problems come about from out of quarter wheels?

Also, do these problems apply to steam engines with the motor in the tender?

Thanks for sharing this.

The connecting rods will bind on an out of quarter wheel. This is true whether the engine is driven from the drivers or the tender.

Hi Nelson. I went one day to the Giant Stadium flea market, or maybe it was the Saylorsburg PA. one, and there are people there always selling old tools. I got it there. It is a small gear puller.

If they are slightly out of quarter they bind up and get a point at which they need force to clear. If out of quarter a lot they wont turn at all.

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know what kind of problems this causes.
I have a 2 8 2 that has issues, maybe this is part of the problem.

Thanks again.
