Starting off this Sunday morning with a little mischief, this mint 1/87 AMC Gremlin is my lovely accessory this week. Meaning to get on my 1:1 sized vehicles as well this week, but two days of intensive yardwork delayed that. Soon, though. Anyway, enuogh this little guy.

My AOTW is actually something that would work only in G scale if not a larger scale. It's a toy gasoline tank I literally dug out of the ground in the middle of a forest last year.

My best guess is that it came from a Barbie or GI-Joe play set or whatever. At least, that's what I thought for a while. On the back there's a screw with some wood plank thing attached and it's supposed to be there which makes me think it's some sort of decorative thing. And at the place I found it, there is junk everywhere ranging from the 1960's through the 1990's. In fact, I found a whole bottle dump full of old Coke bottles, some with the caps still in beautiful condition. I didn't even use a metal detector to find the thing, I just put my shovel in a random spot and there it was! I don't really want to know what I would've found if I searched around the tank. *Shudders* Although it would've explained where it came from and what the heck it is. I apologize for going way off topic there.

Those Fresh Cherries vehicles are really nice, not to mention affordable. I wonder they still make them anymore? I thought they were available at Walmart a while ago. I have a couple, including a yellow Pacer and a few Toyotas in various colors.

It's been a LONG while, actually. I think probably back to 2007. Fresh Cherries have pretty much disappeared from the market except secondary/Ebay. I literally bought hundreds of them. Intend to do an AMC Transfer facility involving AMCs and Tri-level auto racks. They made about 4 different colors each of Gremlin and Pacer cars ( Gremlin - Blue, red, green, black. Pacer - yellow, green, teal, red?.) They also made a 1/87 Hornet hatchback, but I found few, as much as I looked, I found 3 or 4 bronze, and then found a yellow one at the Bowser train store up in Montoursville, PA. For some reason, the Hornets were rare and hard to find. I'd have bought more if I had found more. And unfortunately, they did produce the Matador Coupe in 1/64, but not in 1/87. Not sure why. The other great 1/87 Diecast producer was Malibu International, also a staple at Wal-mart at the same time. I think they may have had a tie-in with the Fresh Cherries, but not sure. I bought hundreds of those cars, too, from 55 chevies to corvettes, to Shelby Cobras. Those were great 1/87 diecast years, 2004-8, then they all just dried up. Hotwheels also made some 1/87 at the time, but mostly hot rods, I bought a few but not many. Most were just too wild for my HO tastes. The ones I really wanted by Hotwheels was the 57 Chevy panel truck, I found more than a few of those, and the hot rod milk truck in 1/87. Sure miss those days, I'd take a road trip on a weekend and hit double-digit Wal-marts trying to get as many AMC and panel truck vehicles as I could. I managed very well. But there's not much (cheap) 1/87 to be found these days at Wal-mart, if any.

I have that pacer in red. I was actually just taking photos of it posed in strange places for my photography class at school, funny you guys should mention them. Saw these Fresh Cherries cars at Walmart ONCE while I was in NY, got one for the heck of it, and never saw any after that. Anyone know what happened?

Looks like we are back to AMC stuff. Found another shot of a sweet marlin that I took at a car show. Of course the Yugo is a perennial favorite, especially one with blown, injected, Hemi power in the hatchback.

I think it was the big recession of 2008 which, like the asteroid hitting the Yucatan Penninsula and killing dinosaurs off, killed off the diecast for awhile. With gas prices at $4 a gallon, and people just not spending, many diecast companies had sales dry up. It just got too expensive to sell diecast at all to make any money, for those selling for over $1. Many companies had their sales hurt by that, people would buy the cheaper $1 diecast, but leave the 2-6 dollar range sit. Didn't affect Hotwheels or Matchbox much, but the rest were more for collectors, and they just sat and sat. Johnny Lightning was another victim, was making a comeback, had some great cars, then Tomy bought them, the sales dip might have been too much, and they killed them off. They Heyday of diecast was the mid-'90's, with Racing Champions, and many other makers putting out some fabulous diecast. There's some comeback now, Hotwheels has a Premium line again and has made some great stuff, there's the TV and Movie lines with the themed cars, and former Johnny Lightning guys formed AutoWorld ( slot car company ) and started selling premium diecast 2 years ago, and are doing well. So there is some returning of some good diecast out there, but so far, nothing in HO scale again has appeared. And with Model Power gone, not sure if those green-boxed diecast will still be made or not. Time will tell.

Sniff! All my models are packed, so this is like my car in High School!
It was bought off the showroom floor with the help of my parents. It cost $2,850. It had a 351 Cleveland engine. I looked at one with a 428 Corbra Jet. My dad opened the hood on the big block, mumbled something about me killing myself, and walked away. Broke my heart! Yes it did!

Those things were really that bad? But then again, a lot of cars back when were basically death traps.

My dad possibly did too. When I was 18 or 19, we had a '72 Catalina with a 400cid engine sitting in the yard. I asked him if I could have that engine to drop in an '81-'87 Buick Regal. He said "yes" and I proceeded to do just that. He later admitted that he agreed because he didn't think I'd actually do it. He provided the expertise on the project, but when I expressed an interest in souping it up, he said he knew nothing about doing that, so we built it stock. I now think he told me that to limit what the finished product would do.

Nice car & story John... I have a friend who went out at 17 and bought a used Nova that had a 427 big block Chevy in it. Scott's dad had been involved in racing his whole life. Scott said when he got it home his dad was looking it over. When he raised the hood and dad seen the 427, Scott said the color drained out of his dad's face and he just walked off...

Not a car, but still an interesting vintage accessory from Life-Like...

They have the usual "blinking bulb" housed in the woodpile, and then the signal lights are illuminated via fiber-optics. One of them needs the bulb replaced, though...

Nice signals Wiley!! I have this same crossing signals but if I remember correctly, both bulbs blink at the same time not being realistic at all. I think I started rewiring one of the pair several years ago and will set mine up to blink as we know them in real...
