and ended up paying WAY too much for this little hottie.

Make me an offer, or will trade for two Tyco or LL Auto Loaders. If no takers, back
to Ebay she goes. She is mint with original box and liner.

Don't know what possessed me to get into this bidding spat, I don't collect Athearn.

Yes, Jeff... Bidding just runs the price up. I use "bidnip" bidding service to make my bids only 3 seconds before the auction ends. Costs 69 cents a bid but to me, that's a bargain for something I really want. I don't use it on a cheap or common train items.

That's a nice piece, and rarely seen. The Chrysler cars are sought after, apparently, so that's why it goes so high. Not really in my budget for right now, but it's nice. Good luck reselling.

I would never pay anymore than $20 for a car like this. The reason I say that is because the prices the sellers on Ebay sell it for are insane for what it actually is. For the same price you can get one of these on Ebay, you could buy yourself a way more detailed freight car or a decent H0 scale train. Still a nice car though, Chops.

Guess it just depends on what you want. I kind of like that black auto loader; looks more realistic to me than those orange ones and from what I can see of this photo, it looks like the cars might be a bit more detailed. Alas, it's not a Tyco, though. When you consider what is being charged for new models these days (say $20. to begin for a cheap rail car, and not unusually up to $35 for things that aren't that special) . . .

You know something funny about these cars? The prototype autoloaders, on the NYC, were set up for six cars IIRC, not four. When Athearn made the car, instead of making it a few scale feet longer to accommodate six scale cars, they kept the length they were already using for the plastic frames, and just made overscale cars for it instead.

Anyways, how much are you asking? I've got one Tyco autoloader, mint w/ cars but no box, that needs a home, so perhaps that can be part of the deal. Can't do much mailing of things for a while though because of some family issues, but I'm still interested. After all, I collect Athearn everything, and NOT tyco! I've only found one of this particular car so far, and another one couldn't hurt. Like everyone's said, it's a pretty sought-after car.

I don't get into bidding wars and only use eBay for stuff I can't find elsewhere. A Proto 2000 E8 I wanted (Chicago and NW) went for 127 plus shipping. Insane! Later I found the same loco, recently listed for 45. Best thing to do is shop around.

It's called sniping some of the sellers 'friends" drive up the price

It happens to me more times then I would like to admit.

Thankfully half the time I lose the item

Thank you The Siding. I had a feeling something was going on,
but couldn't put a finger on it. Guess I got snipped. Nice car,
though, but just not what I collect (Tyco) and just to dang much
$$$$. I relisted it under ebay and might cover half my losses.

I believe you're thinking of shill bidding. Sniping is what Walt does (waiting until the last few seconds to bid). Shill bidding is when a seller or his "friends" place bids with no intent to pay for an item in order to drive the price as high as possible.

eBay 101

Bid once and only once on each auction you are interested in.

Determine the maximum amount you want to pay for an item, including shipping.

With 3 or 4 seconds left, place your maximum bid amount.

If the current high bid is more than your maximum bid amount, don't bid.

If you place multiple bids in an auction, you are only bidding against yourself.

Snipping (bidding in the last few seconds) is the only to go.
