Was paging through a old issue of Model Railroader the other morning and found plans of the Northern Pacific 86' Big Pig Palace car.

I got to thinking about the AHM modern 50' Stock Car...

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/ahm_50ft_stock_car.jpg

Thought it might have some possibilities to put two of them together and make this long modern NP Pig Palace...but upon closer inspection the AHM car, later IHC, really isn't the same beast. Believe the AHM car may be a UP prototype...if it is any prototype.

Then I decided an 86' stock car was too long anyway for my tastes, but what about making a shorty version of this NP car? I scanned the plans for the 86' footer and cut it up in Photoshop and quickly put together this 56' variation...

If I scratch-built the slats and used the frame work of another classic RTR car, I might have something...

Enter the AHM, now Bachmann Silver Series, All-Door Box Car...

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Tony Cook/ahm_all_door_box.jpg

My idea is to dremel out the three doors of the All-Door Box Car and use strip styrene to create the slats and panels similar to the NP car. By cutting two All-Doors down their middle and putting the two non-brake wheel ends together, I'll have a car ready to apply low ladder brake wheels end details. I'll sand off the cast on side ladders and add separate grab irons. The odd steps will go, in favor of new separate more similar to the NP stirrup steps. The roof of the All-Door is a pretty close match to the NP car.

There are two different versions of the tooling for the All-Door, one with high ladders and roofwalk and another with low ladders and no roofwalk...believe B'mann's current issue is the no roofwalk and low ladders.

Have you seen Bowser's "Animal Friendly" K-9 cars? Very unique, very shique... very nice. Pennsy.

Z

K-9 was the car type, not a carrier of dogs.
Oh... nice chop/paste job on the Northern Pacific!

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
