Leading off (again) this week, I chose my current Tyco upgrade project, the Auto Loader transport rack. So far, I've got 9 bases converted to Kadees and steel wheels, only 4 are 95% "done" at this time, going to take 3 to my hobby shop job and test them out on the track there. Very happy with the progress of this project.

With a nod to Microbusss, I decided to "dumpster cam" photo it outside. Although I laid TRACK on my dumpster railroad You gotta have SOME standards, ya know.

Anyway, I found more steel wheels, but need to locate those Athearn style trucks. I think I know where more are, but they're behind a rack, so I will have to move stuff to get to them. Later. Anyhow, here's my converted auto rack, ready for some testing soon.

I've been following your thread on those Tyco cars. Nice work so far.Anyway, my COTW for this week is yet another Athearn Genesis Napa Valley passenger car (The last one I have) and here it is!

I bought this car a week ago for $1.00 at a thrift shop.
Never assembled, but 3 of the 4 steps are gone.
I wonder, did one have to go up Pikes Peak to buy this car?

My COTW is my second kitbashed SP beet rack. The first one was in styrene. This time I built it in wood from coffee stirrers. The rack fits right on to a Tyco skid flat car. Now for some paint and some HO scale beets.

These beet racks are superb! I especially like thewooden one made from coffee stirrers. It demonstrates thrift as well as craftsmanship....all the things that make modeling with Tyco rewarding

Exactly!I mean, if you really look at them, Tyco rolling stock are actually very well detailed rolling stock, even if they do have some ridiculous paint jobs on them. But then again, you can fix that by giving whatever car it is a simple repaint. There's no excuse for Tyco cars being too "toy-like" for model railroad usage. All you really have to do to make them qualify as being considered "realistic" is to give them a repaint, add extra details, weather them, swap out the couplers and possibly the axles and there you go.

Looks like that beet car "takes the cake". It is pretty fine. What caught my eye, aside from that, was Evan's "Pikes Peak Cog Route" car. Seeing as I live at the foot of Pikes Peak and work with the Manitou Springs Heritage Center, I see that as a really great find. I wouldn't be surprised if it was initially manufactured for sale at the Summit House, though I expect it would have been an assembled model for that sales situation. Maybe they also decided to offer it as a kit. I know we have (had?) one Roundhouse Overton Coach that was lettered for the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad (obviously had nothing to do with it . . . Overton coach being pulled up by a cog engine!?). Cool find Evan.

And, just for grins, I'm going to show my Tyco 1860's combine (that I got from Chops) here again (since I posted it in the last COW and the new COW showed up right away) . . .

I had really wanted one of these older style combines; seemed like it looked more appropriate and "to scale" with the Generall 4-4-0 . . .

We enjoy a strong Mexican contingent here in El Paso. Mexico
ran some fabulous passenger trains, which have since pretty much
vanished in the wake of denationalization. Some interesting video has
been published under Railroadiana in the TF, as well.

That vinegar car got me thinking about a modeling effort from my early adolescence. It was a wooden vinegar car from Mid-Continent Railway Museum:
http://www.midcontinent.org/collectn/woodfrt/richter11.html

The tank is part of a broom stick with strip wood glued all around it and the ends built up out of wood, as well. The bands are telephone wire. There are tie rods and railings made of too-fat copper wire. The frame is an old Marx tank car frame. Naturally, Sean's car looks a lot more refined. I hardly use this, anymore, since it doesn't fit in with the grand scheme of the layout, but I keep it around for nostalgia's sake.

Lover the vinegar tank cars Don & Thomas! I did notice right after I received it that it is in need of the two diagonal bands on each side. I figured these are pretty easy fixes and these along with some sort of access hatch in the middle top would really complete the car. I have a couple more, but they like nearly everything else, are packed away for a later day!

I've only got one in HO and it's just an AHM Milwaukee Vinegar Co. one, but I've got you all beat - I have a REAL one!
/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR 4800/20051009.CRW_5945_RJ.jpg
Okay, it's not /mine/, per se, but it lives about 5 minutes' drive away at the lumber yard where I go visit it once in a while. Rumor is the intention is to someday rebuild the wooden tank and use it with the New Hope & Ivyland's photo-special freight cars, but that won't be for a long time.

A sister car at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis shows what it's supposed to look like:
http://lionelllc.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/vinegartank.png

Also I stand corrected... Redwoods, that is in fact an A-C kit, but I'd never seen it before! I guess Ambroid's isn't the only one. Very cool!
