On my day off this week I accomplished a pair of train layout projects. First, I torn down a third of my old layou and removed it.
Next, I put down the track for the small freight yard on my new layout...
You'll notice the TYCO Resource Van was present for inspection of the new yard...

This freight yard is opposite the yet to be finished roundhouse area. Ultimately, I don't plan to use this as a freight yard forever as it is rather small. Eventually, I see this section as a engine yard and I'll have longer sidings elsewhere on the expanded sections for freight storage.
Everything is still running pretty well. I did find a poor spot between a switch and small straight section that I replaced this week. Beyond that it all has been working well.
I installed a Lenz decoder in my Rock Island U25B and a Digitrax decoder in my McCloud River SD38. Remember everything is DCC on this new set-up, so I do have some decoder work ahead of me on many locos.
Next up, I will either work on the overhead section and side panels and/or the side panels that I plan to add to each long side of the 4x8 to give the edges some breathing space.

Looks good! A lot more roomy looking than the 4x8's that I am used to.

Have you given any thought to making your layout dual-mode (both Analog and DCC)? I converted mine this way and am glad I did. It wasn't too hard in any case. But it's probably simplest if you build/wire it as analog and then drop the DCC in.
Glad to see the van is providing some work-hours for ya ;)

I do plan to have a standard DC/analog transformer available for use on the layout, but in general operation it will be DCC only. The layout is not wired for separate blocks or sidings, so analog work would be very limited.
Had an idea for the DCC program track...plan to make a side track next to the roundhouse coming off the turntable a dual ops track. With the flip of a switch this single section of track will be able to go from a regular ops track to becoming the program track for DCC work.
Until I get the top built and the Cat Guards in place around the layout, no more track will be put down. Right now, the only remaining area to build is the turntable/roundhouse area...and I fear a turntable will be too much of a lure for the cats...so no-go until the guards are in place. Might work on the layout roof and guards some this week.

Tony, I'm enjoying your progress and interested in seeing what's next. My rough layout is still 4x8 but I keep planning on adding more. I've had 3 rough layouts since we moved here. It's relaxing to me just to run trains. Good work!
