Hi All,

Does anyone know where or if I can get metal replacement wheels for my Tyco train cars? Just the wheels would be great or wheel and truck sets with coupler would also work. I am looking to keep my track clean and make the cars a little more free rolling.

Any info. would be great. Please feel free to contact me directly if need be.

Thanks
Mike

MyTyco:
What era of Mantua/Tyco truck are you typically running? The old M/T cast metal wheels are paired with the old cast talgo trucks or early mantua trucks for frame mounted Mantua loop couplers. If you are running brown-box era stuff I don't think you increase free-rolling capability by replacing the so-called rp-25 delrin freight truck wheels with metal wheels. In fact, I doubt they will work nearly as well (even though some old-timers don't care for what they regard as their "shiny" appearance). The RP-25s are, in the main, very good.
If your fleet has ailing (or aging) trucks might I suggest searching internet auctions for dime-a-dozen lots of loose Tyco cars from which you could obtain replacements? The other option would be locating old stock rp-25 trucks, sold as separates and often languishing unsold on old hobby store shelves.

Hi Magnolia Academy,

Thanks for the reply. I am running the brown box era cars. The more free rolling comment was more of an after thought really. The RP-25 wheel sets do work great but I was thinking of swaping out the plastic wheels mainly because I understand they leave a film on the track that collects gunk. Any thoughts you have on that would be great.

Thanks
Mike

How to deal with delrin nylon residue on your tracks I suppose depends on whether you're running on brass, old Tyco steel or nickel silver trackage.
Brass seems to respond well to basic abrasives, I run old weighted Ulrich or Revell track cleaning cars (I believe Bev-Bel still sells the old Revell cleaner car) and they seem to do the job nicely. Steel is a bit trickier and probably benefits best from the old mild eraser trick. Again, the solution to residue depends on the type of trackage.

I've replaced the original plastic wheels sets with Proto 2000 33" wheelsets. I also use a cordless drill as a lathe and enlarge the "dimple" in the sideframes for the new axles. Rolling quality improves significantly.

Hey,

I recently unearthed Bachmann's "American Heritage" series HO-Scale Plug Door Box Car "Driving The Golden Spike" and wanted to run it. I grabbed a recent run Bachmann Silver Series 50' Plug Door and pulled its underframe and snapped it into the old one.

If you look around eBay and are careful you can occasionally pick up the recent Bachmann Silver Series 40' Box and 50' Plug Box for very little money. They have body-mounted knuckle couplers and very nice metal wheelsets. These underframes are also well weighted and operate great.

And best of all, the two sizes (40' and 50' underframes) usually will be compatible with a wide variety of old TYCO, Cox, AHM, and of course Bachmann rolling stock.

I am using proto 2000 wheels on my tyco fleet. I am having to use micro-mark truck tuner as tyco's holes are not 60 degree specs. after tuning truck with tuner wheels spin freely. Using metal wheels keeps your track cleaner and you can pull longer trains with your tyco engines.
