Hello All,
Wanted to share a new restoration project a friend of min has just completed for me.
C&O 2-6-6-6 ALLEGHENY RESTORATION - HO BRASS STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BY AKANE MODELS 1962
This is how it was sent to him. All the upgrades & weathering were his decision. I give him free reign over any restoration. I only requested this one be painted and not left as brass.

The original open frame motor was replaced with a brass flywheel & can motor with a gear tower to give it better slow speed control.

He added some backhead detail. I think that is a super touch!

Here it is in black base coat:

He uses an old coffee grinder to make his scale coal.. form actual coal!

Here are some pictures of the final paint:

This is a link to the video if it running. As you can see in the video he has two Akane Alleghenys of his own! As you can tell from his layout, he (bslook1213 on Flickr) is more interested in motive power than actual scenery! LOL:

He actually has a couple videos of it posted as well as the entire photo series of his reconstruction. In comparison to the basket case NP Z-8 4-6-6-4 Challenger I sent him a few years ago to restore, this one was pretty easy and straight forward for him to do.
If you want to see some amazing brass models however, pay his flickr photo album pages a visit.

Wow, Sean, I never thought an Akane could look that good! Your buddy is a master craftsman.

I looked at pictures of a few Alleghenies in C&O Power by Alvin Staufer. The way this model is weathered is pretty true to how the Alleghenies really did weather. I suspect that this was not just some sort of generic steam engine weathering, but was based on the individual locomotive type. Nice job!

Hi scsshaggy,
I text my buddy and told him about this post. He was quite flattered by the compliments on his work. He then text me back later in disgust... He realized engine 1604 didn't have overfire jets. He said he would have picked a different engine to model it after had he noticed sooner! I just laughed! I'm please with it no matter!
Yes.. he is a perfectionist!

I'm surprised he had to step up the speed with the large gear on the motor shaft. They must have been geared pretty low, probably to offset a speedy open frame motor.

That thing turned out so realistic looking. Looks just like a modern H0 scale locomotive.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."
