Went to my train shop job today, and the boss had more estate lots there. One was a Faller coaling station, with working screw-type auger. He said if we can get it working it's worth about $300

He also had a Tyco Kit Bascule bridge, put together, said Made in West Germany. Maybe by Faller as well? But had the Tyco Kit imprinted into the plastic on the underside so it IS a Tyco. Any idea what it's worth? Hand crank, no power. I want it.

Jerry, I used to search ebay "every night" in the newly listed Tyco section. I'm talkin' over 10 years nightly. That bridge seldom showed up. I never really wanted one but always noticed them as I knew they were sought after. My opinion is only based on ebay, it's quite hard to get... I don't know if any other train companies made the same....

That's what I figured, because I can NEVER recall seeing this bridge anywhere. I thought only Bachmann had a Bascule bridge. Not that I searched on it, but searching on Tyco, you'd think it'd pop up sometime. Nope. well, if I can get it reasonable, I will buy it. Will offer the boss 20-25 for it, see if he takes it.

Well, Walt, as I live and breathe....guess what's on Ebay now? It's NOT listed as Tyco, but it IS the exact same bridge in my Train shop, of that I'm sure. Minikits #5818 .

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HO-LIFT-ROLLING-BASCULE-BRIDGE-KIT-/161376184076?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item2592c5270c

And pics -

Now, I wonder if Tyco and Minikits had two different kits? Exactly the same, but one imprinted with the Tyco name, the other not. But this IS the one I have at my train shop, and it says Tyco Kit on the underside. Interesting....

Actually, two MORE ebay auctions, the bridges are by AHM, search on Rolling bridge, they're identical to the one I posted.

When I see the TYCO ones on eBay they are pretty pricey, ending arount 55 65 bucks. I have one in a TYCO box but it was put together (badly) and it looks exactly like the mimikits one.

I think these were made by Pola, like most of the structure kits AHM and Tyco imported. I think it's more common in AHM packaging than Tyco. They are in demand and do go for a lot, but unfortunately BIN prices only tell you what someone thinks they can get.

The other one you're describing sounds like the Renwal 462 coaling station. I have one that I built back in the 70's that still works, but it ain't worth $300. I just found a completed auction for two of them sealed in their boxes that went for $52. I don't think they are nearly as desirable as the bascule bridge. The cool part is that they come with a track insert so that they work with Tyco operating hoppers.

If you are near Sonoma, CA you can visit the prototype:

http://bridgehunter.com/ca/sonoma/wingo-lift/

I believe that this 1967 article is what inspired AHM/Pola to make the kit:

http://www.theweebsite.com/trains/scherzer_build.html

And while we're at it, a recent video of the bridge:

Good gravy.....sure are "collectable" aren't they?

One of those would be a cool feature on a future layout, but dang....for that kind of money I think I could build my own version!

Like most Tyco structures this is a Pola kit and it's likely it's appeared in Model Power and Pola packaging in addition to AHM. Tyco was the only one to offer Pola kits marked Tyco on the base, but a simple die change blanked that out.

The Renwall kit is much rarer; and I believe there is also a Faller or similar coaling station that hasn't appeared since the '60s and was imported and sold as AHM for a time, I have a vintage RMC with an article about kitbashing a couple of them into a larger structure.

Jerry, I believe that AHM had these same kits as they did the Burger King, Pizza Hut, and more....I'm not sure how often that AHM kits show up on ebay since I only search AHM maybe one night a year. However, I have no problem with buying AHM buildings or train cars or engines...Fact they made an engine I want, blue Santa Fe RS-2 ...

Walt - I have developed a real liking for AHM stuff over the past few years. No complaint whatsoever, and would not hesitate on an AHM version of anything really.
