My LOTW for this week is an old Tyco/Mantua Booster in U.S Army livery which is currently in inoperative condition and I am currently using it for a prop on my ghost down H0 scale section.

MY LOTW is an old kitbash from yesterday's train show. The old guy that had it has been bringing it the last 2 or 3 years I've gone, so I figured it was meant for me

This is a scratch-built drive AHM BL2, with Athearn rubber band drive trucks. The chassis is scratch-built. As far as I can figure the paint job is a freelance railroad. I like it, it's well-done so I'm keeping it in that scheme. He also re-did the front/rear railings.

The thing is HEAVY - the shell is packed with lead

Not a bad looking engine, JNXT although the paint job is kinda bizarre looking. I would do the same thing for that paint job as you are if I had it.

I had the same reaction when I first saw it, but it kind of grows on you. Whoever built this thing put a lot of time and work into it - it kind of made me wonder if 40 years from now some model railroader is going to get hold of one of my JNXT locos and wonder "what the heck is THIS?"
One of the things I love about old pieces like this is the history behind them. I like to keep them running just a little bit longer

I think that engine looks good, Jerry! I like the color orange and I think the paint is laid out nicely. If it was mine I'd keep it just as it is...

"it kinda grows on you" I've done vinyl siding on two homes one was light beige, the other Crème (pale light yellow) On both I put shutters on and painted them & the door a REALLY loud red. Many loved them before I was finished, others told me "I didn't care for that at first, but it grew on me!! Soon I'm doing this house in a beige-tan only I'm using a very loud Orange on the doors & shutters....Always fun to hear the comments...

Nice looking, nicely detailed model. Is it a Plus or Spectrum?

Jerry, that BL-2 is awesome, and I would have snapped it up in a heartbeat! How much did you pay?

The scheme is perfect for a railroad in the Sunshine State, and if the original owner milled that frame himself, then he was a skilled machinist. It looks like the pulley and sleeve on the motor shaft were turned from acrylic stock, and they give it a lot of extra reduction. With an O-ring or square belt from the motor to the pulley, and clear hair bands driving the axles, it should be one smooth runner.

]My LOTW is one I've had in a project bin for some time now. Decided to take it to work and try and fix it today. Got'er done, I will be posting this elsewhere as a Cox Army Diesel repair. Anyway, it needed quite a bit of work to undo some flaws, but the motor is now running flawlessly. Haven't tried it on actual TRACK yet, but will soon.

Man, I like that Sunbelt BL-2! Very nicely lettered, I'd keep it like that myself. I love home-made BL-2 roadnames, I have a few myself ( PRR, AV among others ). Hope to see that one running again soon.

A seen I have viewed many times at many places. This takes me back to the 1970s and early 1980's. All I had was Tyco, Mantua, Athearn, Varney Life-like, Bachmann, and other train set train stuff. I used my Atlas turntable in one location and a Airfix one in another. Both were about the same size, just the Atlas was powered. The Airfix you pushed. Nice to see again.

Do you mean the pilot truck derails? If so, is the pilot truck sprung? The 2-8-0s from the factory had a light spring between the pilot truck and the frame.

I noticed that the pilot wheels are way back almost between the cylinders. There appears to be room farther forward. I wonder if the wheels are hitting the cylinders in the curves.

I have the version of that engine that was a 2-8-0 right out of the box and I think the pilot wheels rode a bit farther forward. You may want to try extending the pilot truck a little so the wheels are more centered in the gap between the cylinders and the pilot.

Also, a too-short truck could have the wheels canted around too sharply so the flange on the inside of the curve is trying to climb the rail.

Judging by my two examples, the pilot wheels are in the right spot for the angle of the photo, and I have no tracking problems. Tyco / Mantua didn't make a huge assortment of pony truck lengths (though the one for the Prairie might be shorter). My guess is he's missing the conical spring, or the wheels are out of gauge.

Nice repowering job, Ray. That's the method that was suggested by the old MR article. It makes the tender look like it has Reading style trucks. Btw, what are the protrusions in the fuel tank area? They don't look like the frame casting in these photos: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31853

Couldn't you just cut or grind them off, or is the motor in the way?

P.S. Another idea is to shorten the drawbar. You can take a good chunk out of it without any interference problems on 18" curves. I did it on the 2-8-0 I repowered, and it really helps the appearance.

Nelson: I'll check on the wheel gauge and maybe lube the pivot point a bit, it does have the spring.

The protrusions is the bachmann frame, I'll hide that with some tool boxes eventually.

So to shorten the drawbar, do I just drill a new hole and cut it?

Buss: I think I have the caboose, and it'll have an interior shortly!

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Ray, yup, drill & cut, or the other way around. Just test the spacing on a curve to make sure it leaves enough clearance.

If the motor or motor mount isn't in the way, you can grind the frame away in the center.

Edit: Just remembered that the pivot point on an 0-8-0 frame I had was a larger diameter than the mounting hole in the front truck, which caused binding, so I reduced it with a diamond burr. That might be the case with yours.

Lol Buss yes, I have the set. Everything that was part of my first two train sets has been put on my layout

Well almost all I had from my first AHM set was the diesels and the grade crossing, the clementine set is pretty much complete and on the layout, save a few cars that are on the "to finish" pile

Did this have a matching caboose or not?
Cause I think quite a few Tyco locos didn't
But since I has ALOT of ATSF cabooses One would be sacraficed for that

Holy crap, SAMPSON? I just found my first sampson coach this week, itching to learn more about the company... what a fascinating locomotive!
