Back in my youth, I had an ambition to be a railroad engineer. However, my well meaning, parents would shake their heads sadly and say, "see what is happening to the Penn Central? Not a good business to get into." So, for better or worse, I did not.

But this was, along with the Boston and Maine, Canadian National and shortly thereafter, Amtrak (1976) the dominant railroads of my early interest. Did I mention the Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo (my first rail experience) or the New Jersey Central (as it faded into Conrail)?

Ah, the very wonder of it all, metal elephants clanking ponderously about, the scent of grease and diesel. The stuff of boyhood dreams.

Yeah, CG-1. Brianstyco, I liked watching your videos to get info on certain Tyco cars I might want to know about. Plus I have some Tyco cars that I would love to know more about. Anyways, Chops, good job on that video.

Incredible video Chops. Have been humming that soundtrack all day.

I had dreams of being an engineer too, but my dad - who was living Penn Central at his job - did not want me to go into that business

And, there was no mainline PC action here, just tired old diesels laboring over neglected tracks, switching coal hoppers and chemical tank cars. A gritty railroad world, no gleaming passenger trains to be found. But yes I still recall vividly the idling locomotives by the dispatcher's office and their unique sound/smell. All that world is gone now, taken over here by NS and now very little traffic compared to those days.

Thank you for your kind replies. Terrible video, but I loved doing it. Truthfully, to get all those Tyco entities to stay on the track, I had to weigh each and every car done with as much scrap lead and metal as I could scrounge up- The whole get up must weigh at least ten pounds, and required those three locomotives (the pusher was a dummy) to pull their little hearts out!

Hardly! That video held my attention a whole lot better than a lot of vids i've seen of trains running on layouts. You don't often see backup moves either, and the caboose hop cutting across the frame in the foreground was a creative touch.

Oh yeah, the scrap metal probably explains the BN boxcar's severe list!

That first coupling maneuver was especially Penn central-worthy, though the trackage was disturbingly free of debris. Also, the C-Liner ran too well.

I like the yard office cabeese (is one an old Silver Streak?), and that tug is amazing!
