I'm sure some of you are familiar with Operation Lifesaver...

www.oli.org

With their new campaign "See tracks? Think train!" I thought I'd show off their various safety tips using my model railroad layout, with the citizens of Roundpost Junction taking part in these dramatizations!

Trying to beat a train to a crossing is a very bad idea. Even if you tie, the train always wins.

Be careful at multi-track crossings. Another train may be coming on the other track in the opposite direction. Pardon the lame pun, but "don't let a double track double-cross you!"

If the crossing gates are down, the road is closed, and there may be danger certain. Do not cross the tracks until the gates go up and the lights stop flashing.

Don't attempt to drive around a lowered crossing gate. It's dangerous AND illegal.

If your vehicle stalls on the track, get out of the car first. If a train is coming, forget the car and get away from the crossing!

Railroad yards and tracks are NOT a safe place to play or hang out. It's also illegal. Also, playing on or around freight cars is a very bad idea.

Riding an ATV, moped, snowmobile or similar vehicle on the tracks is also a bad idea. The sound of the motor could drown out any approaching trains!

Railroad tunnels and trestles should also be avoided. They are not good shortcuts, and if you're caught in such an area as a train is coming, you may not get out alive. (I know this tunnel is wide open inside, but I am obviously referring to REAL ones.)

I just know some of those slot cars are gonna try to beat the Tyco 630s ...

Riding snowmobiles on snow covered track can be dangerous for train crews too. The snow can get packed to the point that it will derail a train.

I heard of a (dumb) lady she was told to take a left at the tracks
She didn't realize the tracks were DOUBLE & went across ONE track & drove down the other!
yeah train did destroy her car but she's ok
& now car is on the Operation Lifesaver trailer

Also OLS is doing a See Tracks Expect Train for people who just walk across the tracks

Roundpost Junction reminds me of Devils Post Pile on John Allen's Gorre & Daphetid. I always wondered what inspired that name!

Did John Allen's Devil's Post Pile look like this formation?:

I was invited to ride a OLS Special train in this area a few years ago. They had a video camera mounted on the lead loco so the passengers had a engineer's -eye view of crossings from monitrs in the passenger cars. They also played a tape on the system of a recent OLS special train where a truck had tried to make it across a crossing too late, and the OLS train destroyed it.

That's pretty pathetic, getting hit by the Operation Life Saver train.

Tell me about it, man.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

When I was 6 I had a kid in my class get killed in the yard a couple of blocks away. He was climbing between 2 box cars when it suddenly started to move. It certainly made a big impression on me. I shake my head every time I see drivers do these stunts even today. just goes to show you how stupid some people can be.

I had to do a little research because I had never heard of the real Devil's Post Pile, but John Allen's version bore a vague resemblance to it. It probably was John Allen's inspiration since both he and it were in California.
