This is the current construction status of my engine facility/small yard/ switching layout:

It is meant to be appended to a larger layout (when I retire in 5 years) as an L-shaped extension. The plastic base in the lower left is for the Walthers Cornerstone engine house. All my structures have been built. (I may post them as time goes by) and I have been working on rolling stock this past 2 years. I will get my DCC system (Digitrax Zephyr Xtra, I think) this fall and return to track work as the weather cools (here in hotashellsunny Florida), as this is located in my garage.
This is a pictorial diagram of the layout I made prior to starting track work location:

It combines the switching work I desire with a mainline run-thru (future connection as per above) to offer other types of structures to be included. Looks to be a busy place- and it will be!

My pin dashboard thingy right next to the computer I'm typing this on right now is the same as the material of that layout there so I'm pretty sure it's cork. I could be wrong though.

Right you are- that is a solid sheet of cork flooring underlayment material I got at Home Depot in the carpeting aisle- where they used to carry it on that large roller device. They no longer sell it, I believe, but I have enough of the material left which I originally bought (stored rolled in a plastic bag) for various small purposes- bases for several hobby tools, etc.

Some of the businesses in my office park clean out on occasion, and I've snagged several cork pinboards from the dumpsters around me. I set up a small HO slot car set on a 2 x 3, and have several others that size I have at home for N gauge and TT gauge track, too. I think I have one hidden behind a door at work that's about 3 x 4 as well. At any rate, they work well for temporary or fun layout construction. :) Your switching layout there is rather nicely laid out. I've been considering building one like that as well.
