Coal loads made with:

Speedy Dry > Small gravel used to pick up oil spills from floor purchased at auto parts store.
Foam, or Wood fillers cut to to fit hopper car.
Saran wrap.
Krylon Gloss black spray paint.

Put the saran wrap in the car and place the form in the car.
Arrange the saran wrap to cover the car.
Arrange the speedy dry load as desired.
Spray the load with the black paint.
Allow to dry and remove the saran wrap
Placed the dried load back in the car. >>>> Load=filler and speedy dry

You may want to use white glue to secure the speedy dry and filler before paint

That is among some of the best custom coal loads on H0 scale that I have ever seen period. Good work,JRG.

Sorry, too glossy for my taste. Real coal + sledgehammer still beats this stuff IMO.

I like it, especially looking at pre-made coal load price$$$$. ARE THEY KIDDING??
Plus it looks easy to do.

As for the too-glossy look: coal IS somewhat glossy (matte gloss?), but one technique I have tried and liked is to spray the load flat black, then dry brush it with gloss black. Gives it some coal shininess without overdoing it.

Another option would be to use Satin, or other sheen of black. I like the gloss, but a flatter sheen may fit an individual taste better.

The speedy dry is fairly coarse for gravel, but works well for crushed rock or rock slides. It could be used for gravel in G scale. It comes in large bags. It takes color well. Just a few suggestions.
