You may be wondering, why is there a new COTW so early? Well, the answer to that question is that I will be leaving on a vacation and I won't be back for about a week so I wanted to post my OTWs early before I forget. Anyway, my COTW this week is a CSX caboose I got in my first train set.

Older and newer versions of Mantua/Tyco's CB&Q caboose:

KayBee had stores in shopping malls. I remember going into a KayBee and seeing a Life Like (or Industrial Rail?) Georgia Railroad 55 ton hopper lettered "Railroad" with "Georgia" left off. Now I regret not picking it up!

Continuing Adams' train of thought, but a little more old school:

As for KayBee: Man, I really miss that place. They only had LL and Bachmann trains and buildings, but they had Atlas track. Not much of any of it, in my experience, but enough to help a guy get started.
They also had model kits of cars, planes, etc., and all the paint and such for them. Seems like those are harder to find now days as well.
I spent a lot of time there up until they closed suddenly about 2005-2006. Not sure exactly when, but I do remember taking my youngest girl there when she was a baby.

I remember KayBee in the mall in Chesterfield, Missouri in the 70's, before I moved to Texas. As young, "serious" modelers, we tended to look down on it, but we still went in and browsed now and then. They carried a lot of AHM--most not very good quality, but I'd like to get some of those AHM/Rivarossi passenger cars at the prices they had back then!

Yes it is sad that Kay Bee is gone, they were run into the ground by a group corporate raiders who called themselves "Bane Capital". But look at the bright side, with all the money Mit Romney made from that deal he was able to afford an elevator for his car.

The graphics on this car are incredible. I live in St. Louis which is the home of AB Brewery and cars like this are very collectible around these parts. quote:I can think of one thing that rivals the Root Beer....

I live on the other side of the state. It seems like AB has a firm grip on everything. A case of Busch light is always about 2 bucks less than Coors light. Any beer car gets a premium around here.
BTW: I've been away for a while, but I'm glad to see Ben's dumpster-cam is still up and running. Believe it or not, that's the highlight of my day.

My COTW is a 2-fer, a Life-Like (?) Browning B&O crane car matched up with a small B&O flat car of unknown manufacture. The crane car was a yard sale box find, another one that was in sad shape but with a careful clean-up and untangling of the 'cable' it's in good shape - the flat car was an el cheapo find at a train show.

What a great scene. I love the Pinto 2 door wagon. My grandma had one, I spent a lot of time in that thing going with her to garage sales.quote:My COTW is a 2-fer, a Life-Like (?) Thanks sschaggy and now that you say that, it has Roundhouse written all over it (figuratively not literally). It's a neat little car.

Now the real trick is to find the Athearn Blue-Box version of the 30' shorty flatcar. I'll post a picture of mine if I ever dig it out...

From the emoticons, it appears you voted three times in a row. I'll vote for your Auto Loader you sent me if I can get my %%$# camera to function properly! While I'm at it, I'd like to vote on that tablecloth. It really coordinates with those lovely Chessie BLT's, I mean BL 2's.

Alright guys....here's where things get all "Twilight Zone" weird...We were talking about Kay-Bee toys. One of the first things that popped into my head was that I purchased a Life-Like "construction site" set from them back in the early 90's. It had a fence, I-beam building frame, various materials/figures and a CRANE. That same crane has now shown up this week on a flat car, which Micro/Ben has pointed out was used on treads as the crane in that building set. Oooooooh....freaky stuff going on here!
By the way, nice to see AMC still cruising the highways in that crane shot. There used to be a guy on here with AMCGremlin as his handle.

burlington77, don't you see Rod Serling at the wheel of the Pacer?
I kind of got the same feeling from the crane car in a different way - I had sold one just like it on ebay about a year ago, trying to thin out the collection. Then last month this one arrives laying in a heap at the bottom of a big yard sale box. ("It's baaaaa-aaack") So I'm keeping this one!
I'll post the crane with treads in the AOTW soon just to make sure your memories are all back
