Ok, help me--picked this up recently. Seems to have wood sides and floor. Doors and ends are either metal or plastic. Underframe has nice detail, even with a realistic chain. Handrails are metal and separately applied.

It's definitely a modern H0 scale car. I know that just by looking at it.

It certainly is modern. It's the latest in Silver Streak kits from the 1950s!

I love it. Look at those razor-sharp printed graphics and that fine detail. It really does look good. This 60+ year old kit could run with the latest in HO without standing out poorly. A John Nehrich might pick up on the lack of a specific prototype, but we so often forget just how fine those vintage wood-and-metal models with printed or lithographed graphics could look, when assembled with care. So much for the supposed crudity of vintage HO!

You just proved your theory on the fact that the kit aged well in 60+ years. When you said that, I was like "How is that even possible?" although I think it was the style of the axles that fooled me into thinking it was newer. Anyway, I've seen built kits very similar to that one there. The cars were made of wood, metal, and other materials similar to the prototypes of them.

Yes, it's a Silver Streak, I have the same car but in the bright red M&StL that everyone liked about 1958.

Oh yes, silver streak all the way. You found one in INCREDIBLY good condition, too. The trucks and wheels are in fact original, they were the first to produce all-metal wheelsets like these, and they're just as good as today's intermountains IMO. The only modification is the modern kadees, the rest of the car is 100% stock (though people almost never installed the brake chain/rods...) I've got a couple dozen of their reefers and boxcars - including this very one, but in miserable shape. and I must say, they're at least as high-quality and detailed as almost anything made today, so long as they were built right. SILVER STREAK!
