I think the sheriff and the hobo is one of the best operating cars by Lionel. I already had one, but it had just the car and the police officer, now I can run two different cars if I want.

Nice COTWs so far, guys! My COTW is an Illinois Terminal gondola from Athearn that I got in my first model train set in 2004.

I'll toast to that. Would love to see video of Sheriff and Hobo. That Illinois Terminal with wild red trucks. Too cool. BTW, who is "zombie chick?"

I will never know if this piece was buried in someone's back yard for a few years or if it fell, half way, into a bucket of bleach. Anyways, for $3 I had to snatch it for its most unusual weathering job. It rolls like a champ, despite appearances.

I bought some cars once that were literally buried in the ground for over 20 years before being found, dragged to civilization and dumped at a train show. 3-dome Deep Rock tank from Athearn and an AHM Wabash covered hopper, probably one other. You can still see the marks where roots grew all over them, I can't remove them with anything I try. Also a whole string of things that I can only guess were on their sides on the floor when a massive flood hit and they were left for years - one side fine, one side rusted away.

Well, this last week I left a box of Tyco I had been photographing in the back of my car. On a sunny day.
Not too hot. But a lot of Tyco got shriveled, melted, and warped. I was fit to be tied. Well, got on the internet and replaced most of it, upgraded a few pieces. Got into a bidding war over a set that included an Ajax car and a Green Giant that I'd never seen before. Slippery Slope strikes again. Almost went after a couple of Westinghouse billboard cars, but managed to fight back the temptation. Kids can go hungry this week. This bleached out piece was miraculously spared the Great Meltdown.
By the way, which one you Tycomaniacs was I bidding against? A few more dollars and you would have beat me. Must have been like 15 plus counterbids on that lot. Very happy seller.

She inherited an awesome cache of Tyco from her grandfather and made it available to the members here. Her last posts concerned the less-than-perfect health of her son.

The majority will be restored eventually. Some rescues are easier - a HOTCO undec 3-dome tanker with literally 1/4 INCH OF DUST on it and rusted-off ladders is already prepped for paint - but a few like that Deep-Rock tanker are gonna be real challenges. It took me no less than 3 hours to take that poor thing apart - I had to cut a hole in the frame to remove the center screw where the head wore away completely as I unscrewed it. I think it might be the first Athearn car in history that's too far damaged to save - I have rebuilt things and replaced everything but the shell, but on this car even the shell isn't intact.

Real sweet coach, and a Varney, at that. A precious piece to a guy like me. Wish I could shrink down to 1/87 and climb inside. Got any more? Please post! We want to see!

Well after my insane little bidding war, I ended up a few pieces that I wouldn't mind trading for what I don't have. I wouldn't be opposed to trading of the Green Giant white and green box, and maybe even the Planters, as I got one of each. I was really striving for the ajax and the dark green JGG box. Only another Tycohead would have fought me so savagely for this set, so if any of this rings a bell for you, PM me and maybe we can divvy up the spoils, somewhat.

Nice find! I love the look of it. Also, I'm jealous of how cheap you got that thing.

Is that a Mantua? I just got a Mantua in a junk lot that looks like that but the "Missouri Pacific" and "NOT&W" are reversed from yours. Mine also has data.

Here is a pair of Tyco BN cars. They were identical up until this weekend. Painted the roof silver and did some weathering.

To reply to Barry et al., I've got a 4 car set of the UP Varneys. They have neat red seating (wood, not plastic). I have 4 unbuilt kits--two B&O, two Illinois Central. I'll post if I ever get them built.

My COTW is a Con-Cor Santa Fe Streamline CS Diner I got at a train show. Someone had put a bit of work into detailing it. I added diaphragms and replaced the couplers.

For any Mopac lovers out there--a Mantua aluminum baggage car that I painted for the Mopac. I installed a Kadee coupler on one end to transition to my locos.
