Well, having seen a picture recently of a super 630 with, surprisingly, two-axle truck sideframes...

...I got wondering. The reverse would be doable, taking sideframes/trucks from an SD24 and jamming them under a GP20 body to create something looking like an SD18. Considering the liberties taken with the GG1 and such, I'm sure Tyco would have seen no problem with the the small differences between the GP20 and SD18 carbodies. They both have the same sloped nose. Anyone ever tried it? I know someone around here has some C&EI RS1325's; the CE&I also had SD18s...
(I would have quoted wks's post over in outdoor photography, but I didn't want to risk hijacking his thread.)

| The Chessie engine was missing its sideframes when I bought it at an antique store years ago. I just placed some sideframes that I got at a show recently to make the engine presentable. It may not be accurate but still looks decent enough to display. ** The outdoor photography thread is for everyone to show their equipment in natural outdoor lighting. I just created the thread to show others that it is easy to build a small module and showcase buildings, trains, scenery, etc. This idea is not original since other forum members had and still have posted outdoor scenes.

Here are those RS-1325s you mentioned. I also did a pair of Athearn SD-9s to match. Funny thing but I was actually thinking about SD-18s earlier today (spooky synchronicity)I think the Tyco SD-24 or Athearn SD-9 would be a good starting point, I was considering building one for the C&O because I have a spare set of Kato Trimount trucks that are in need of a good home. I dig the AAR trucks on the big Alco...it almost becomes a new model Century unto itself. Also in the weird synchronicity department, I saw a single three axle truck from an M-636 on the back of a flatbed truck going down the highway today. they have a shorter wheelbase than the typical EMD flexicoil or HTC or GE Floating bolster truck and would therefore make a viable candidate for a Tyco P/T truck with the correct sideframe. Seems to me these were cast by Dofasco?...I feel compelled to fab some up now.

Definitely an athearn SD9 mechanism would be good if the Kato trucks can be fit to it. I did think of the SD24, but the shell actually has more differences to the SD18 than the GP20 does though.
Aaaaand, someone beat us all to it. http://www.karenparker.net/images/cohs04/SD-18-1804.jpg
