This is probably somewhere on site but at any rate

I have a Tyco gp-20 that only lights up

I checked the motor gears made sure they connect and turn soaked motor in track cleaning solvent all it does is light up

so I have to assume it is the armature

Any thoughts short of buying a new motor

This is the loco with the plastic driver in the middle

What you're describing is a Powertorque truck, and they are problematic. I doubt the armature is burned out, though. Check that the wire from the font truck is connected to the upper brush retainer on the motor, and that the retainer is snapped in place. Also check that the gears are free to turn and not bogged down by old grease.

If that's alright it's likely dirt on the commutator and brushes, or collapsed / overheated brush springs. Taking the cover plate off the motor and cleaning it out, and polishing the commutator (the 3 silver contact plates on the armature) is the only way to really service it. 91% alcohol is good for degreasing, and for soaking the brushes.
