FYI Here are some illustrations that may help identify the difference between a 4 wheel drive and an 8 wheel drive AHM/IHC FM C-LINER. One of NickelPlate759's post made me aware that there were 8 wheel drive Mehano C-LINERS.
Does any body have a parts diagram for the 8 wheel drive model, can't find one on HOSeeker.

The 8-wheel drive actually exists in some AHM releases, I have one here that seems to be 100% original in a Bicentennial paint scheme, that is 8 wheel drive. Best guess they were changed in the early 1980s.

The C&O unit is 8 wheel drive, although you can tell it's a dummy by the plastic wheels. They are easily powered with drive parts from any dual drive Mehano diesel.
Some of the signs are the more realistic scale FM sideframes, the gearboxes visible between the truck and chassis, coupler mounts, etc. The Milwaukee unit is the more common 4 wheel drive with the oversized bulky trucks based off the diecast Rivarossi originals.

Are there any associated clues in the shells? Such as detail of the fans, etc...or even road names?

Not that can reliably determine the drive type. They did change from 3 separate lenses to one lightbar and from pimple fans to flat grilles sometime in the 70's, but the later shells are found on both. The trucks are the only indicator. The coupler box jutting from the rear truck is a dead giveaway, for one.

Yes - identical to the coupler box on the AHM 8-wheel drive Alco RS11.

Interesting, I have an Atlas C Liner and the motor only works in reverse. Is there an easy fix? Has that vertical turret motor that powers the truck.

The 8 WD shell also has cast in "claws" near the center that slip into the chassis. Also it takes a very unique weight, similar to the one in the very late Tyco F unit made by Mehano.
