I have been sitting here after watching THE LONE RANGER on tv. this is the new one with Johny Depp as Tonto, and am amazed at the way Hollywood suspends reality and historical accuracy for the sake of a story. I love the computer generated train wrecks, they are sooo cool, even though the movie is a stinker. Equally incredulous is in one scene the have a kid playing with a HO train layout, using what appears to be a TYCO engine. In 1869 the railroad builder most likely didn't use 4-6-0 engines, they would be too heavy for the light rails of the era. I have tried to find info on the real life steamer that was used in the movie, with no luck,Anybody?

I saw that train set! That was AWESOME!!
Wish I could get that layout too

The show Wild Wild West used HO trains in the show as well
Now since WWW came out in the 1960s I'll hafta ASSUME the HO 4-4-0s were Tycos
Plus its called Steam Punk As in using modern stuff in the Steam Eras

Yeah the steam train was a mock up pushed by a diesel out in Utah at Monument Valley
Track was a 5 mile loop
More info can be found on the Blue-Ray of The Lone Ranger

Let's see. The story takes place in 1869 on the transcontinental railroad (which was quickly and cheaply built to get revenue started ASAP). The track in the movie has heavy ballast, creosoted square ties, and 90 lb. rail.

Throughout the video, they stress authenticity, you know, like using Janney couplers (patented 1873) on a train in 1869. I recall seeing a movie preview of a train wreck in which a connecting rod flies through the air bending and flopping like a fish. That's pretty authentic, too, since rigidity is absolutely necessary to the function of a connecting rod.

Yessiree, you've got to love Hollywood!

yup PLUS the UP track did NOT go thru Texas either!
it went thru Nebraska, Wyoming & connected at Promentory Point, UTAH!!
May 10, 1869
Plus the Lone Ranger FLOPPED at the box office big time BUT its still a good movie
I believe the trains are at a museum now

I still gotta get the rest of the DVDs of Wild Wild West TV show
I only has the 1st season in B&W (no offence )
I used to not like it when it was in reruns

The Walking Dead had some interesting railroad infrastructure in the second half of season 4, as the group of main characters had been fragmented, but all eventually decided to follow signs and maps posted along the nearby rail line to "Terminus," a supposed refuge. There was a cool concrete coaling tower with a build date of 1926 from which a stranded walker dumbly plunged to its gooey terminus from the upper level in after spotting prey down below in the next-to-last episode.

The bad part came later in that same episode when they built a tunnel for a set piece, which started out convincing enough, until it started to not only curve inside, but curve at a radius too tight for anything but a trolley or subway car. A main character was also supposed to have brought the reinforced concrete roof down, causing a phony looking cave-in that she used to crush a herd of walkers with nothing but a li'l ol' machine gun. I have to give the crew props for making the rail look as convincing as it did, tho, since it was just made of wood.

Now most of the characters have arrived at Terminus, which was really the Southern Railroad's Pegram Shops, on the south side of Atlanta. I didn't realize until looking at screen caps just now that the overgrown area they walked past was the old turntable pit. Much of the interior filming in the final S4 episode was inside the huge backshops.

You can see the filming locations plotted out on Google Maps near the bottom of this page, including the coaling tower:
