Ken,
I guess maybe the option was to remove some engines and put in passenger modules. Might get hot and loud.

This was quite a locomotive... a "One of A Kind..." Ready for EIGHT (8) prime movers, but built with four (4) at the time... found to be too costly for production...

HOWEVER, the chassis was eventually used and duplicated in making the Baldwin Centipedes!

But, each Centipede produced (and at one at a time), had another improvement because they were built one at a time. Essentially there were no two that were identically engineered/produced.
Union Pacific had ordered the first two Centipedes 998 & 999... cancelled the order. These two units became Demo's #6000(2nd) and #6001. They were double diesels UP declined to claim.

The Mexican N de M Railway did like the demonstrator colours/colors of this Baldwin and adopted it as their own. They also did the same with the FMTM Demo's adding that colour scheme to their four axle FM locomotives.

The Santa Fe rebuilt a lot of locomotive, but the most extensive and possibly the oddest ducks of all were the F3/7/9 to CF7s. The old truss bridge bodies were partly removed and a external frame was added. In Later units the cabs were modified for air conditioners with an angular cab. These locomotives are still serving some short lines today.

IMHO that engine is dolled up somewhat - tall stack top, headlight - to better represent what people remembered as old-time in 1948. That was a common thing in the mid-20th century with old locomotives, they were restored incorrectly to an ideal rather than to exactly what they may have looked like as built.

Ah, the engine that Catfordken showed us a while back. Very odd engines. I find them odd because they look like a mixture between an American locomotive and a British locomotive. They're still pretty cool though.

Whitcomb WWII 65-DE-19A Military Diesels.

Two Buda (correctly pronounced beauda) DCS-1879, 283 HP at 1200 RPM, engines were used for prime movers in each locomotive. The electrical equipment was supplied by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. and consisted of two 197-A main generators, four 970-A traction motors and the various standard Westinghouse control equipment.

HOW TO HIDE A 65 TON LOCOMOTIVE
“Whitcomb Diesel locomotives built here in Rochelle have played an important part in this war on almost every front. Being smokeless and easy to camouflage against air attacks these locomotives have been extensively used where standard coal burning locomotives proved impractical.

In our January 12th 1945, issue of the Leader we printed an interview with W.F. Eckert, chief engineer at Whitcomb in which he told how Whitcomb built locomotives had solved the English and American transportation problem in north Africa, German bombers had blasted most of the regular locomotives as their smoke was easily spotted by the fliers.

Rochelle Whitcomb Diesel locomotives were then camouflaged as regular box cars. In the make up of trains the location of the “ box-car-locomotive”was constantly changed to elude the Germans in their bombing attacks.

The plan proved very successful, and it has been credited as one of the major forces in the British success in the drive from Egypt to Tunisia during the latter four months of 1942 and early 1943.”

PRR:

The boxcar is a UP crew-training car, as I recall reading somewhere. By allowing the effects of rough handling to be easily observed, it helps crewmen develop proper cargo-damaging techniques.

The trucks are some sort of high-speed freight design. Symington-Gould maybe? There were several designs that came about, around that time, which usually involved extra springs at the journals, to reduce unsprung weight and improve the ride. UP used similar trucks on their express boxcars.

Enlightening. Thanks for explaining! I wonder what other roads had a rough-handling car like this, I can't say I've seen any others. Found a 1954 booklet from the PRR showing all sorts of pictures and info on the dangers of rough handling, but I know they didn't have something like this.
And yes, now that you mention it, Symington-Gould is right... they were originally built with friction bearings and I guess I didn't recognize them chopped out for rollers. You can even get them in HO! http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Bethlehem-Car-Works-HO-Trucks-p/bcw-1219.htm

A man and a woman, who had never met before, found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train. Although initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, the two are tired and fall asleep quickly -- he in the upper bunk and she in the lower. At 2:00 a.m., he leans over and gently wakes the woman, saying, "Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I'm awfully cold." "I have a better idea," she replies. "Just for tonight, let's pretend that we're married." "Wow! That's a great idea!!" he exclaims. "Good," she replies. "Get your own damn blanket."

Back around 1993-4 The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) had a number of FL9s upgraded with EMD 710 engines and AC traction motors. These engines were rated for 3200 HP and equipped for HEP power. Some were used until 2007 on Metro-North. Truly a wolf in sheep's clothing.
