I started construction today on my second layout in my house. We moved in 2002 and I had a layout built within a year, but have wanted to try some different things and decided to remodel the model layout.

The twin pillars will have a top shelf soon that will provide upper storage area and I'll mount lights under this upper shelf to illuminate the layout. Shelving will also be built beneath the layout.

Here's the pics of the first 4x8 section that I put up today...

This section will have a classic Atlas layout track plan, the Great Trunk Eastern...

I plan to add to this layout with a shelf layout running around the room eventually.

Nice, big, well lit room there. Veray-niice.

You say this "section" will be an Atlas plan - are you going to expand around the room, or into an "L", or just whatever/whenever the mood strikes?

The overhead storage is an interesting idea. Good use of space. Personally I wouldn't trust myself to not klutz something down onto the layout below.

PS That car spotted at the elevator looks familiar [;)]

Yes, that Illinois Central Hopper came in on a freight from the southeast some time back...think our connection with the St. Canard actually.

I plan to build more 1 or 2 foot wide shelves down the walls with more storage space above and below those shelves. Removable bridge sections will span the two windows.

If you can make out that Mopac wall map opposite this new 4x8, I plan another 4x8 layout to be based there and connected back around to this new section.

I did the upper storage shelf for a couple reasons. First, I wanted to be able to put in good lighting above each section and that lighting can be mounted under these upper shelves. Next, we've got a family of cats that at times enjoy kitbashing...but not very prototypical kitbashing or kittybashing depending on how one was to label it. I will be mounting cat covers from the upper shelf that will shield the layout from unwanted operators, but that can be easily removed and put up on top when I'm running trains.

"Kittybashing".... ah haha that's great. I know thy pain... but from a different perspective.

See, back when I was in grammar/ High School with STC v1.0, we had a cat named Sebastian. He was in all witnessed seriousness, the sweetest dang cat ever... just a perfect wonderful cat. Anyway... I caught him leaping up there to get a better vantage point out the window nearby. Did a little damage, nothing terrible. But I got a little upset and scolded him in that manner you use for animals that aren't going to listen anyway...

Well, would you believe he continued to jump up there and walk around, but in the most ginger fashion possible so as not to disturb or knock anything over? It was a sight to behold. I'd sometimes rearrage things just to see if he would notice and 90% of the time, he passed the test! I just kept a corner of the layout table nearest the window free for him to sit on, and he left everything else alone.

Indeed... the only significant damage the original Saint Canard sustained, was due to the two named Sibling Storms: Hurricane Adam and Typhoon Alexandra. On separate occasions no less. [:(!] There's a few traces still left to this day. So when I use the term "survivor" to describe some of my old stuff, I'm not kidding...

Anyway if you have cats that aren't as well trained as Sebastian, the kitty barriers sound like a great idea.

I want to get a cat, and the notion of how it might interact with the layout has crossed my mind. I figure since it's not by a window that will remove most of the temptation... and getting a kitten to train from the start would help too.

Hey Tony. Those cat barriers sound like a good idea. Not only for the trains but for the cats as well. I have a video where my cat jumped up on my layout and almost sat on a little pine tree...OUCH![B)]

I can't wait to see pics when it's done.

I'd name the cat History. 'cause that's what it'd be if it didn't listen. My wife didn't think that was funny oh well back to the corner.
