Here's two things I tried that turned out really well.

I have a Hotel that I used to set up in my display and a lot of fire engines and my son decided on year to make the hotel as being on fire and put a bunch of fire engines and police cars around it. Looked pretty good and for a 6 year old he was proud of his concotion. Well he went to bed and I took the hotel and lined it with silver tape (aluminun foil would have worked) and found an unused red or orange flicker bulb from a xmas candle, I wired the bulb up inside the hotel and didn't tell my son and the next day when he was running the trains I told him to throw a switch on and see what happened, That hotel really did look like it was on fire he loved it.

Another thing i tried with varying results was to cut 2 holes in the platform @ 3'' X12" on either side of the platform and run a set of tracks through the hole around a shelf underneath and up the other side, I could run a trolley around and then down underneath as sort of a subway and it worked pretty good just have to watch what you run on it as everything doesn't climb too well but a trolley worked really good and all my kids loved it.
