Rather than batting clean-up, I'm just gonna clean up the first post, with this nice Tyco Boraxo boxcar. Forgot where I got this one, but one of my nicer billboard cars.

* A interesting car, not often seen. I think made first by Globe, Athearn, Charles Menzies, and last Bowser. I don't think they are made anymore. Also the 50' cars didn't sell as well as the 40' cars. This makes them harder to find. * These are sheet metal cars. Some made of brass, depending on when, and who was making them. They had a wood floor on which metal detail was fastened. You can see on this car all lettering was screen printed, over a properly colored car. They were sold undecorated also, of bare metal. The brass cars are more sought after then the tin ones. I have seen some collectors keep them built unpainted. * I think this car is neat because of the" Seaboard Railway's" reference too one of their little referred to name train, the" Orange Blossom Special ". I have 2, 10038 and 10096. For me a great east coast car, that would mostly have been found east of the Mississippi river. * I hope you like it.

Nice looking car Frank! And I like the Seaboard too. I was born just before Seaboard ceased to be and it's cars (and ACL's) are a part of my early childhood.

Hi Glen. The ACL's freight car were commonly seen up here in the NYC area. One of there light pacifics was used for fan trips out of Whippany NJ back in the 1980's. I remember it as being a USRA style loco. That and the 4-6-0 that the ACL used for local passenger power looked a lot like the Varney and Bowser one. Do you have passenger trains powered by these? frank

Hey, don't hate me Frank, but I'm primarily a diesel/freight guy! I grew up watching tired first generation geeps (and later, Family Lines System GP16 rebuilds) switch the small branchline yard a block from my house, with nary a passenger car to be seen! That's where my heart truly lies, so no, no steam powered varnish in my stable.

Good for you Glenn. We do model our memories. Our layouts are reflections of what we have seen. What we know. If it makes you happy it is the right thing to do. This is a great hobby. frank

Here's my COTW. An Athearn Rio Grande stock car made in the '50s and '60's. Best part is I got it for free! I was looking at it and the seller said I could have it for free. Also, the car was originally not weathered. The seller weathered it and added Kadee couplers. /tyco/forum/uploaded/kovacste000/20140218103106_IMG_0132.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/kovacste000/20140218103150_IMG_0133.jpg I found out all that information about the car from the HOSeeker Athearn page. http://www.hoseeker.net/athearn.htm

If I recall right, the tin-side ones with wooden frames are usually Athearn red-box (I guess Globe might have made them too, don't know), Bowser's version of the car is of course a completely different, modern tooling. And not often found? I've gotten two different variations of PRR circle-keystone and an N&W car, all the original Athearn kits, in the last year, and I haven't been looking for them in particular.

The Bowser metal cars were produced from the old Varney tooling. The Athearn tooling was used to produced the Menzies, Pacific HO and Park Varieties cars.
Frank's Seaboard box car is an Athearn or Menzies car. Both companies produced the 50' Seaboard box car.
