So, I have issues laying out ground cover and both my turnouts and ground throws stick like the dickens! I know most folks don't glue down their ground cover by the turnouts but I'm worried the decomposed granite will get into stuff!

Any of you folks have some suggestions other than scraping with an xacto blade??

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Hey Ray, Maybe someone else will have something better to tell you, but I think patience and persistence and that sort of thing, even if you have to pick some out with a tweezers. I've made that mistake a few times and it is quite satisfying when you get the mess cleaned up and things working like they should. You can do it! Best regards, Barry

I usually just scrape any ballast away from the moving parts of the turnout with a screwdriver and then use a shopvac to suck up any loose bits. I generally don't put much ground cover around turnouts anyway, and what I do put down gets applied very carefully with a spoon and a paintbrush/glue. It's a good idea to mask your turnouts while putting down other ground cover around them.

I've found a good trick to ballasting turnouts is to paint the cork the same colour as your ballast, and then apply as little ballast as possible. While the glue for the ballast is drying work the switch open and closed to make sure nothing seizes up.

Cheez that's pretty much what I do too. Mask off the moving parts first then carefully ballast the area around it. I use the foam roadbed, which is black...so I just leave it as is under the sliding bar.
