I was able to do a bit more on my Athearn Crane project- covered exposed wire portions with liquid electrical tape (available at any hardware store or Home Depot). This stuff is very useful for insulating any small wiring connections- use a toothpick to "paint" it on.

I then mounted the couplers before proceeding with the weight and the wired trucks.
Then I routed the truck wires thru the central hole I made in the turret weight and attached the flat weight before attaching the trucks. I made the additional weight from a piece of lead boot roof flashing I picked up at Home Depot, then use double stick tape to adhere it to the steel weight and drilled thru the existing screw holes in the steel plate into the lead one. As the four weight mounting screws will keep it in place, the tape drying out several years later will not be a problem.
I then pulled the wires (routed under the weight plate) thru the turret hole completely and attached the trucks.

The leads from the trucks are a bit long and will be connected to the male 2-wire connector after being trimmed and soldered together.
Back to the bench for now.
