As promised, I am sharing the results of my quest to find the perfect replacement chassis for the Tyco C-430. This one uses an Athearn SD-40-2 chassis as a starting point, the trick is to get the type B truck to fit in place of the type C bolster.

Here are the modifications necessary for this conversion as seen in a side by side comparison of the before and after chassis as seen from the bottom.

Type B trucks can now be installed. Chassis can use either a standard Athearn drive or be fitted with an aftermarket can motor of your choice. AAR type B side frames are appropriate for the 2 Reading units or the same units in Conrail paint. GE floating bolster side frames can make a good substitute for the Alco HI-Ad truck but I tried another option.

These are side frames from an Athearn AMD-103. I think they look pretty good as Hi-Ads, especially after some trimming and black paint. They will do until I can fab some masters to cast my own. I now that Tiger Valley makes these, but I will probably make my own version because I also plan on making Hi-Ads for the Tyco Powertourge and MU-2s. The drivetrain from the AMD -103 would also be a good choice as a donor for this project because the length is close to the C-430.

metalsmith....NICE fitting of a old shell to a newer frame! That ole C-430 will run, AND pull now!
The filed, fuel tank is a nice touch! Question, have you tried fitting the factory Athearn motor inside? Hows that pan out, I mean really, I have yet to have tried this from an Athearn GP38-2 frame, which is what I believe you used, which also was the frame under the 38-2, 40-2, and the 50 and GP60 from Athearn......
NICE! Can't wait to see it all done!

There are some mounting nubs inside the Tyco shell that allowed for the original weight and fuel tank to be held in with long screws. These nubs need to be trimmed away to allow for the Athearn motor to fit. Also, the plastic wings that extended the length of the original fuel tank need to be removed for the Tyco shell to fit on the SD-40-2 frame. I also failed to mention that the coupler boxes will need to be body mounted since this conversion requires trimming the length of the Athearn chassis and the removal of the original coupler mounting pads.

I think a member here used a Bachmann B23-7/30 for a retro fit as well. Cool re-power!

Here it is with the drive from the AMD-103 installed, The U boat drive is a good choice but the chassis a little short and the fuel tank is pretty boxy compared to the Alco tank. The geep is another good option but again the tank and bolsters are a little short for the C-430. Using the SD-40-2 chassis is definitely more work, but it does give Tyco C-430 that lengthy look.
