this weekend was vintage weekend in my town. there were many events, including markets, stalls in the main street, a soapbox derby and outdoor cinema. i only got to a couple of events, the main being railways related. the others were a car show and outdoor cinema, which i left early in order to return to the rail event.
a friend of mine is president of SteamRail, a preservation group here in town. their collection includes heaps of rolling stock, several locos, a couple of buildings like a signal box and workmans huts and a 110 year old steam crane. this weekend was the first time in 30 years the steam crane was powered by steam. previously it has been run off a compressor. the boiler needs re-certification, so the steam was provided by a traction engine, which came from another group 45 mins away. [a journey which took 12 hours, at 7km/h. top speed!]
what follows is a selection of the best photos from the weekend. i have taken over 200 so far, and the crane is running again tomorrow. i did not include photos from the car show. all photos can be found here: http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/sunhuntin/library/heritage%20weekend%202014 while videos are here: http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/sunhuntin/library/heritage%20weekend%202014/hertiage%20weekend%20videos
a scan of a newspaper article. the east town yards are across from where i spent my teen years. sadly, they were demolished when i was about 1 or 2, so i have no memory of them.

two old tablet exchange boxes

hamish, chief crane restorer pulls the whistle. he is in his early 20s and constantly impresses me with his talents.

the traction engine hooked to the rear of the crane. the boiler for the crane can be seen in the doorway

a better vide of the engine

one of SteamRail's locos. i think its a price? will have to check.

another 2 steam traction engines came to visit.

this one was in town giving rides to kids. yes, it runs on steam!

the crane. the boom wasnt working. it was basically just spinning its gears.

the traction engine preparing to head home for the night. what takes maybe 20mins by car, takes an hour on this. on the hill behind is the war memorial tower. up near that tower is where i spent the first 9 years of life.

the red part is what was moving on the crane. they had it functional for forward and reverse. only a small movement, compared to what its designed to do, but considering it was fully ceased when they got it, theyve done wonders.

| Wow, looks as though it was a nice fun event to attend. And it is always great to see old equipment being put back into service. Thanks for sharing.
