Bachmann Trucks

I read Justin's question about the B23-7 trucks in a previous post. This prompted me to do a little digging {research}.

For many years I have admired the Athearn line of Blue Box Diesel engines. They have built many 4 axle models yet still had a lot of common parts. I could pull a core truck from a GE U boat and use it under most of the EMD GP and F Units. Just change the side frames. Except for older stuff the Athearn blue box line parts aree going away.

I have been watching the newer Bachmann standard units and suspected that the 4 axle trucks would interchange. This appears to be true with the exception of the mounting tower on the trucks. The side frames also look as if they are interchangeable in most cases.

If this is true then the possibilities for upgrading drive trains and scratch building will have a new source for frames and parts. The bad news is Bachmann only sells complete truck Assemblies. They do sell some geared axles and wheel sets.

I also found replacement trucks for their older 4 wheel drive diesels. The side frames appear to be the same as the newer trucks. I have not found these before.

The Bachmann parts site now list Pancake motor trucks and dummy trucks to repair the older HO diesels. These are complete with traction tires. It looks like they have a newer side frame. Rumor has it that the older power trucks were designed for a somewhat limited life of going round and round. I think these could be used on some of the other older brands of diesels. I do not recommend these, I just found them!
