I inherited an album collection from a family member and was surprised to find this. Someone actually went trackside during the running of the American Freedom Train and recorded just the audio of the train passing in several locations. I turned the recording into mp3 and loaded it on a portable player. I can now plug my mp3 player in to miniature portable speakers that I hide in my G-scale trains for an el-cheapo sound system that sounds really good.

Cool! The previous "Freedom Train" used the third PA demonstrator... albeit painted white and matching the consist of the rest of the train.

I believe that's an album from the early 1970's.

Awesome inheritance!

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I still have that album! My dad bought it for me in the gift shop car when we saw the Freedom Train in 1976. Some really nice cuts on that, though my vinyl is a little worse for wear. It's a quadrophonic record, but don't ask me where to find a quadrophonic cartridge now. I'm sure that was a niche audiophile thing back at the time. It would be nice if it had been issued on CD.

We saw it with 2101 on the head end while 4449 was being serviced.

So, to ask the unasked question - where is the Freedom Train now? Was it retired, repainted, sold off?

The gift shop-So that is where it came from. I saw the Freedom Train when it came to St. Louis Mo. It was parked on Wharf St. under the Gateway Arch. I have played the album on my turntable with no problems and used its built in converter feature to turn this in to a CD. I have seen some of the cars scattered about at different locations. If I am not mistaken, some of the consist belonged to Ross Roland. One interesting bit on the album is that the train had both an air horn and a steam whistle. I read somewhere that they installed a whistle from a steamboat. One reason was that the locomotive was originally equipped with an air horn and they had to blow it so often during the tour that the air reservoirs couldn't maintain enough pressure to run the brakes!

Here's 2101 as she looked while doing Freedom Train duties in the eastern US.

She burned in in a roundhouse fire in 1979, and is now only suitable for static display.

I like PA's, but I would much prefer steam versions. Ross Rowland was a big part of the Freedom Train project. His office used to be in the old CNJ train station in Lebanon, NJ. I spoke to him there once about volunteering, and he had the whole Lionel / Bachmann Freedom Train set on display on a long shelf.

That's a cool set!I especially like the golden eagle on the side of the locomotive and the coaches. The livery also looks nice.
