I will start off this week with my WVDA Mobile Lab Car, that I did as part of the layout I did for the 2011 WV State Fair. It is an IHC combine, upgraded with Kadee couplers and metal wheelsets. Was also my first attempt at doing my own decals.

The decals look real nice. Do you use the solv-set and softener from the store, or do you have home remedies? Are buying decals from E-bay risking getting old dried out ones?

I use the Microscale Micro Set when applying, and then the Micro Sol to get them "set" to the model - whether I am using commercial or those I've printed myself.
On old decals, I brush a layer of the Microscale decal film over them - same stuff you use on homemade decals - and it does a good job of keeping them from cracking.

Yes there is a risk with ebay decals, but I've had good luck. generally if the decals are from Champion, Herald king or any of the now-defunct decal companies there is a good chance of getting dried out ones, but in my experience the Microscale decal film has done a good job saving them.

My COTW:

From the collection of the late Ron Keith – known as “The Plow Man” for the many, many snow plow and flanger examples he built:

A New Haven all wood scratchbuilt flanger!

Just purchased for ~$54 the other day out of Calvary Canada!

Walt - If you compare that searchlight car with the Tyco flatcar for the crane I'll bet its a almost exact match

Fantastic decal work. My experience with older decal has been pretty sucsesful, I usualy give them a coating of dullcoate BEFORE using them.

Trying a technique Microbusss uses, I decided to use the kitchen trash-can as my photoset. Most flat surfaces are full up in my house! And an appropriate candidate for this photo shoot, being a PineSol boxcar, I probably should have cleaned off the lid better. Oh well. "Gimme" some time, I'll get it right.
