While tunneling in my basement today, I reached my far-corner HO trains, and started sorting through them. I saw the Lionel Passenger set on the box label, so I pulled this box out. Whoa! I'd totally forgotten I'd had this set! The A engine trucks have fallen apart, the welds holding the brackets to the top of the trucks have broken loose , so I may just get a replacement Athearn or similar F7 Chassis to use under this shell. No telling if I can ever find another Lionel F7 chassis like this one. I will have to try to run this set sometime, I must have bought it off Ebay, but had totally forgotten about it until now. Another of my Lionel HO OTW posts.

Wow...I wants that one. Very nice!

Just thinking, I have a pair of P2K Alcos I could do just like that, and you could send me the cars and forget about it again?

Nice Lionel Set, proving again Lionel never let anything stand in the way of a nice train set, since the 1 to 1 scale Texas Special did not have dome cars.

rivarossi lehigh valley "john wilkes".
my former boss bought me the loco and tender from a thrift store in oregon for $20USD. it didnt run when she got it, but the guys in my club were able to get it working. sadly, no headlight and the nose has been glued to the rest of the shell, so one cant be fitted. [its meant to have one, but the bulb must be gone]
the coaches i paid about $300USD for. they all have interiors and ive bought lights but havent got around to fitting them yet. also have people to put inside them.
runs like a dream and everyone in the club loves to hate it, lol. one guy especially will run it almost every time he is down there, and ive left it to him in my will.

** The Lehigh Valley's John Wilks.
* Just adding this photo of a locomotive I no longer have to better see it.

Here is the IHC matching set I had. These were empty cars. Cars were not lettered for the John Wilks train. No lighting. Just empty shells. They were very light and didn't run well. A lot of derailments. I weighted the first 4 cars and the set ran better.

* The Lehigh Valleys only streamlined train with all new cars at the start of operations was the John Wilks.
* Not to be outdone the Black Diamond received newly streamlined locomotives which had different front pilot areas then the John Wilks. The train had some of there excellent cressatory roof Pullmans repainted and modernized to match the John Wilks cars, with some additional new streamlined cars added, at the time of the John Wilks first run.

cheers, guys. that set hasnt been home for more than a week since i got her. she has a permanent place on the club layout and is normally used to test new track for bumps etc.
the photo is crummy, but it was the only way to get the whole train in, lol. frank, i like your photo, very clear and detailed. thanks.
the loco seems quite rare and usually goes on ebay for several hundred, the coaches slightly more rare.
i also have the IHC coaches, but the colors are brighter than the loco so it doesnt look right. the rossi ones are a perfect match.
i have been trying to find out if rossi released any other coaches in the scheme, like an end car with the rounded tail, dome car or observation car. havent been able to find any on google or ebay, so im guessing not.

edit: a clear combo pic of the coaches and loco. US mail car 1028, 913, 914, diner 1009 and pullman.

Someone had an O scale version of this train at a train show a couple months ago. I literally stood there with my jaw hanging open - just stunning. Had never seen it before. Very beautiful paint scheme and the loco design to match. pretty awesome

Hi Sun Hunter; If those passenger say Rivarossi on the bottom as the loco does, You have a great set. In New Zealand having them there makes them very Rare in your country. Here they are around but highly sought after. Ken gave you a average price for that set. Your cars are cressatory roof type. They were not run on the John Wilks but the Black Diamond. The Wilks ran all streamliners. The Black Diamond included 2 new streamliners with the repainted Pullman cars. If you find a few streamline coaches that is what was run. The Locos used on the Black Diamond were very similar but not the same.

Next questtion is:
Did Lehigh Valley have such a passenger train & loco?
Now imagine that scheme on a diesel loco!
Ok that'd be cool to make but which loco to use?
My vote is on Alco PAs or GEs

thanks, frank. did the black diamond have the same paint scheme? im fairly certain they all say rossi, but will check tonight. for some reason, rivarossi pieces dont sell for much down here. ive seen several coaches and locos relisted many times for cheap prices. if i could afford to buy them, i would. all different designs... no john wilkes yet though!
i have tried to find information, but its hard to track down.

one of the guys at the club confirmed the coaches as rossi.

that set isnt too badly priced, really. wish my coaches had the boxes, but at least the loco does.

HI Sun Guy; Good to see your set is all Rivarossi. The Black Diamond and The John Wilkes both shared the Same daylight paint scheme. The Asa Packer was Orange, Black, and White. IHC made what is lightly streamlined Pacific locomotives. They made one painted very close to what would have been correct for the Asa Packer train set. IHC made the set of cars. The Valley used Corriallian Red for passenger cars in the late 1950s and 60s. The Black Diamond original ran black passenger cars with gold lettering and accent striping.
MDC Pullman Palace cars make a good train set for the first Black diamond. The Mantua Pacific camelback is a good representation for the Valleys Camelback Pacifics. Only the LV ran camelback pacifics and mikado's. Mantua modeled theirs from this prototype. The only detail that has to be replaced is those ugly long headlights. I'll past me Black Diamond set again soon with a pacific camelback
