Tyco Red Box Combine. I have shown this car as part of my SOTW before, but just noticed the interesting difference in the "Tavern" font from one side to the other. Can't imagine how that came about but I'd like to hear the story

Old Life-Like Track Cleaning car. Won't use this to clean track though... This is a replacement for the one I had in the early 70s...

Probably a good thing you won't use it - the tank is known to leak, being a split mold design and plastic to boot. I've never heard good things about this one. I have a couple, and the tank is split on one of them already I think.

I agree, Jerry. Had one years ago that didn't leak but just couldn't find using it as a good thing. I found it's place on a side track display. Had to have another one though !

* A all metal ( walls, roof, ends, hand grabs, and roof walk ), with plastic hatches and ladders reefer car. It is IC done in silver with green lettering. It has a wood floor. I think it is a Varney reefer. Of the oldest type made because of the wood floor. Varney later changed to cast metal floors with a lot of detail cast in. Then made the same floor in plastic. frank

Very nice car frank - I love those old all-metal cars, the real metal really adds something that plastic can't duplicate.

Hey, Adams, are those black Studebakers painted? I bought about 6 of them loose at a show a few years ago, and they are totally clear, body and wheels. Looks like yours may be painted, just curious if they're painted, and on the inside or outside.

I took some time off over the holidays and built this Detail Associates kit. It's an SP beet gondola. I've had this kit laying around for over 20 years and never built until now because of the gajillion parts in the kit. It took me about 8 hours over many days to put it together, but I'm happy with the way it looks. Next stop is the paint shop and decals.
It's really light, so I will be adding weights and rye seed as a beet load. As much as I like this model, I think I'll stick to simpler kits and RTR.

I just received this today--a Lionel HO mechanical reefer. Yes, being Lionel, there are several prototypical inaccuracies, but the previous owner painted the roof walk and brake wheel, added fuel tanks underneath, body mounted Kadees, and Dullcoated the car to make a very nice model overall.

Well, I don't know what happened to my response to Redwood's sugarbeet car, but basically, after saying it is a great appearing model, I agree with his pattern of sticking to ready to run or easy to build kits to develop my rolling stock roster, which is getting pretty full right now. I have superdetailed cars in the past, but my kit-building skills have diminished to the point where I look for easier ways to add rolling stock. I have several super detail kits languishing in my archives right now, and one being built by the seller of one of them. I haven't heard from him in quite a while, now, and wonder if he is as frustrated as I was.
Right now, I am trying to collect tank car photos to make up a pattern to letter some tank cars. I specifically need UTLX photos, if anybody can help me find some, and maybe some ACFX and NATX.

Hi Gary ! Nice looking Varney metal box car. Opps a Athearn metal box car ( thanks Bill ). You don't see to many being sold anymore. they are all in collections. There are a lot of them out there just happily owned. A good find. The thing about the metal cars is you always feel like you got something special. Also you never have to add weight to improve the way it runs. frank

| Gary, your MP 120001 metal box car was made by Athearn. Varney never produced a MP metal box car with the number 120001, also B-69 will be found on the lower right of the Varney MP cars.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that. The more I looked at it, it does resemble an older Athearn car, plus there is no stock number on the box. But none the less, I like it anyway and I have two distinct pieces to add to the fleet. I only paid $6.00 for it at a antique/flea market.
