What's the best coach or observation car for a kit bash of the infamous Walther's Oscar and Piker cars? I want a pair, just can't stand paying big cash for one!

Justin, First off, let me do a bit of teaching, the "Piker" isn't a coach at all. its a Diner, with a seating area, quite small but......None-the-less a Diner.....
The Oscar, is a an Observation.....
Now to more answer your question, WHAT Clerestory roof type cars, do you have? That is the main starting point, OR more to the point, what brand of these cars do you have, that you can stomach cutting up?
THEN look at the pictures of the actual Walthers models, and pick what best comes close to those pictures.....
I myself? I'd pick Rivarossim, "junkers" NO good cars, Reason why? Rossi is the best for the use of the A/C duct on the cab roof edges of the same roof line car, (There may be others, BUT they are A. New, and B expensive. UN LESS you have a new one that's junk then go for it.....BUT the older Rossi cars in junk state can be GREAT starting points for either of these cars.....Second choice to use as a base model or a model to "rob" parts from? IHC, of the heavyweight class Clerestory roof cars........
REMEMBER, these cars, the Oscar and Piker, are "make-Believe cars, so anyway you build it, will look good if done right, BUT also remember, if your going to "reproduce" the actual Walthers car, to come as close you can to them.....
I have a few plans on these up my sleaves too!

It would be funny to split up the Pullman name on these two coaches... "PULL - MAN," as if one coach had been cut in half.

I don't believe it!!! I have both cars (original walthers kits that I made yrs ago) sitting in my display case. Even back then the rivet counters were up in arms over them as not being prototypical. Back then Phil Walters poked fun at them, saying that even though no real car existed, the point was to have fun with the hobby ( much like the Penn Central decal set for a J3a hudson steamer, boy what a stink over that one!) Now along comes Barry with a picture of a real life one! I did not see any reporting marks or name on it and am wondering if someone decided to build a 1 to 1 model for themselves? Anybody got any further info on it?

ken that probably is a salvage being cut up. As I live in and model NYC/B&A territory I can say or certain they never had anything like this in revenue service. Judging from what I can see in the background, that may be the E. Harmon shops and this unit is meeting it's final fate with the cutting tourch. I must admit that it would wild to see a whole train made up of these single truck cars and engines.

Since the front axle probably isn't driven? on this shorty diesel, it would be fun to redo the BACK half as a B unit, to do the actual pulling, then the shorty passenger cars. Yeah, great fantasy scheme there. Hmmm.... lesse, a Marx Diesel drive unit, put up front, then a dummy B unit, and Oscar and Piker....yeah, I can see this, totally.
