So I got a Tyco Turbo Train for my birthday a few months back. It's in great shape, but it couldn't run on my layout! Being me, the only choice was to make a brand new chassis from scratch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdonOb4cMeg

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the best running Turbo around!

real cool
I always thought that maybe removing the magnets & putting lead weight there would make the TTs run on any track
That way it doesen't derail on the switches

It looks like it runs really smooth! I don't think you mentioned in the video, does it pick-up the power through the wheels rather than a set of slotcar shoes? Great job!

Thanks everyone! It is a very smooth runner, especially since I used high quality Intermountain freight car wheels. Electrical pickup is through all 4 wheels, which is working well, but I need to do a little more fine tuning before it's perfect.

I'm thinking I'll add some simple interior details once it's running perfect. Maybe an engineer with some controls in the cab, and a turbine or something in the windowed back. No point in trying to make it looks realistic though, so I might as well have fun!

Definitely the only Turbo Train with a sheet brass frame. Did you use the Mehano double-lead worm?

I wasn't aware there was a Chessie version! That would look pretty cool.

The gears are the double-lead worm and worm gear from an AHM/Mehano center cab switcher. I know a lot of people don't like the Mehano drives, but their gears are smooth!

The Chessie only came in the Twin Turbo style, the type that ran on regular slotcar track...although I'm sure you could easily build it a railway chassis!

Eric,
Really? I thought the Chessie version was the same as this one here that Darth rebuilt?

I have to change my searches for that set as that may be whats killing the find of one for sale!

Question tho, would the Chessie TT run on normal HO scale track? I see that it was a Slot Car item and wonder if the 2 tracks have gauge in common!?

The later, wider TT's were built on slot car chassis's, they won't run on HO scale track. Not even close. The original's had special-built chassis's with railroad axles under them. You'd have to scratch build the chassis's for the slot car versions to run on rails, but would be an interesting project.

Ken,
You lucky DOG you! I will be looking for that Chessie TT.....just to have one would be cool, BUT to have one used on my layout as a "Mono-rail" elevated, would be AWESOME!

There's some on Ebay, someone either is claiming they're an original test shot and trying to get big bucks, or something. I've seen this Chessie scheme more than once lately on Ebay, so I suspect there's more than one set available.
