Starting off this week's LOTW , you'll need a magnifying glass almost! After working on some O and Standard Gauge Lionel Saturday, I came home and dug out my Marklin Z gauge steam engine, which has needed total disassembly and cleaning to remove all the hair, gunk, etc that the previous owner had let accumulate. I had it back in one piece in about 1.5 hours. Working with those tiny parts compared to the massive Lionel gear, quite a switch! But it's running happier now, still a bit jerky, but I think the track needs cleaning. I'll do that tonight and see how it does. Here she is :

Wish there was a way to put in some more weight, but space is precious inside that tiny shell, only place is around the cab. I might can squeeze in some weight there. Here's a pic with it apart.

Those european models, Marklin and Fleishman, fascinate me, especially the Marklin cantenary electric prototypes, but I never took the plunge. Catford Ken has some nice English steam prototype photos posted on here.

It's like when I go from Ho to G. Had to rebuild the running gear of my G-Scale New Jersey Central 4-6-0. Much harder and more labor intensive work then my large HO collection

Nice looking Mogul there Ken. Nice finish. At first I was thinking it was a nice example of the newer plastic ones and then I got to looking and see that it's one of the old brass ones. My pretty much done template for a guide bar yoke for my Mantua 2-6-0 sits on the drawing board while I fool around with the layout and other models. Guess I need to look at some photos like the one you posted and feed my inspiration.

some lovely locos in this thread! i love the little marklins, and the blue glittery one is lovely.
heres mine:

its one of the bradford exchange hawthorne village sets. i got this and 5 of the coaches for christmas. the rest is still to arrive. havent run it yet as dont have a powered layout at home, nor do i have enough track to cobble one together. will maybe take it to the club, but i dont think itll work properly as the body is huge while the wheels are HO gauge.

thanks for the confirmation. found conflicting reports on google. ive spoken to the club president and we have identified 2 points where it might not get past... one is at the station, where it will have to take the second loop, and the other is under a new overpass..

Hi Frank!
This is the listing photo! I do not have it in my possession yet. It's paid for, but as far as I can tell, not shipped yet. I did not take the photo and plan to take photos of it as it should sit, when it arrives. Then I plan to relist it.
Maybe this is better:

Sean, are both sets of drivers on the Garratt powered? I thought there might be a central motor, but I don't see any universals between the units.

Hi Nelson,

Sean, Nice to know it's dual-motored. A central motor wouldn't be possible with Pittmans anyway, which I assume it has. Although I did see a Pittman-style once with the shaft passing through a hole in the magnet... I wonder why that wasn't done more often for diesels.

My loco of the week is a PFM United Benson Log Co. 2-Truck Shay: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131228160430_Shay01.JPG I more or less inherited it from a deceased cousin. At the time, it was a box of parts. I reassembled and painted it, adding coal to the tender and the ropes to ring the bell and blow the whistle. These were fine pieces of magnet wire: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131228160704_Shay02.JPG It was missing the lids for the rear sand bin so I contacted PFM to see about ordering replacements. They just sent me a couple without charging for them. That was pretty generous, considering that I was not even the original buyer. /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131228160901_Shay03.JPG It eventually became clear to me why the engine was dismantled, in the first place. It made a rattling noise where the worm comes down to the gear on the crankshaft. I mistook this for the worm hitting the railhead at times, because it is pretty low-slung. The truth is that the gear on the crankshaft was worn out. Eventually, it started to skip. It looks like a bear to replace being built right into the engine assembly. I shimmed the engine mount so the gears engage just a bit differently and the engine runs again. I don't know for how long, though, so I use the engine only occasionally.
The electrical pickup had room for improvement. One truck picked up from one rail and the other from the other rail. I added wipers to make it pick up on all wheels: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131228161434_Shay04.JPG
I found an advertisement for the same kind of engine, here: http://www.brasstrains.com/classic/Product/Detail/045181/HO-Brass-PFM-United-Benson-Log-Co-2-Truck-Shay-Custom-Laurel-River-3

Magnet wire is the fine wire wound to make electromagnets. In this particular case, it came from a burned out twin-solenoid switch machine.
