Put this little motor on the track and tried to power it up but no such luck. Dead. The wire that runs from the back truck that powers the light isn't attached but I don't think it would matter as far as getting the motor going.

Any suggestion to get this little motor up and running? Just don't want to toss it in the trash can :)

I would take a piece of wire and start shunting around parts. For example, touch it to the right rail and the motor brush that's fed by the rear truck to check if the problem may be in the rear truck or the connecting wire. If that doesn't work, touch the wire to the left rail and the grounded motor brush to check if there's any interruption in the front truck.

In short, try to narrow down the possibilities.

Well, you have to approach it from a Tech point of view. You want to see if the motor works? Ignore the wheels and go RIGHT to the top of the motor where the two brushes are, and touch those with power. Either the motor works, or it doesn't. It cuts out all the in-between stuff. One similar motor I was just working on, the Penn Central F9, had a commutator pad on the armature fallen / burnt off, so the motor wouldn't turn much anyway. But always check at the motor connections FIRST, then work backwards to the wheels and contacts there. usually there are contact issues with the wheels if it won't work at first. So check the motor up top, then move outwards until you find the problem.

IMPORTANT!! > One of the problems with the way you have it set up in your picture? There's no WEIGHT on the wheels, so they won't necessarily make good contact with the rails. That is a huge reason trying to troubleshoot it this way won't work well. No weight to make good contact. use probes on the end of the power wires to go directly to contact points to check it, not like you have it pictured.

It may be an illusion because of the blurry photo, but is there a screw stuck horizontally under the front of the magnet? Any ferrous metal across the poles will partially shunt the magnetic field, making the motor weaker until it's removed.
