Guys - are all brown box Tyco F9's PT powered? All red box MU2? Or was there overlap? Any way to tell except by examining the actual piece?

I believe Tyco used the MU-2 motor for a brief period in the beginning of the Brown Box era before switching over to the PT. All of the Red Box F's used the MU-2 motor. There were changes though that allow you to identify the different phases that the F's went through.

Early MU-2 powered F9's had plastic posts inside the shell that the trucks screwed into. No mounting tabs were visible on the outside of the shell.

Later MU-2 powered F9's had metal brackets that snapped into the shell via metal tabs. These metal tabs are visible on the outside towards the rear of the shell.

The PT's have plastic mounting tabs visible. The shell also went through several changes that make it relatively easy to identify (chunkier ladders, actual number-boards, etc.,).

To add some confusion, Tyco produced a "Deluxe F-7" later on in the 70's that featured a plastic MU-2, although I would argue these were worse than the PowerTorque F's.

For even more confusion, Mantua produced their own line of F-units that very strongly resembled Tyco's Red Box units.

I believe someone did a good F-unit write-up years ago. Hopefully someone can dig that up...if not, I'll do up a photo comparison in the next few days!

If you go to Tyco Forums Home, and then click on Tony's Goinincirclez website, he's got an entire posting on the F7/F9 carbody Tyco, with all the different variaions. I was just there last night as i'm trying to fix a guy's PennCentral F9 from his childhood, needs a new power truck. so wanted to check out the color of the trucks on it. :) I found a donor Santa Fe that has a usable truck.

hey thanks Jerry - I will check that out. Really enjoy ready those write ups.

I just acquired a complete '60s Santa Fe passenger set, unfortunately the F9 is locked up. Frustrating that the truck is riveted and I can't get into it easily, but I am going to drill them out and do the screw tap procedure that EM-1 posted recently.
