Well I've been too lazy to post updates but not too lazy to work on building my HO replica of the only surviving steam locomotive from the Folsom Prison Railroad. A 1926 Alco 0-4-0T build number 66311. I've been obsessed with the ol 0-4-0T for the last two years. My life goal is to someday own the real thing. It's presently stored in a shed on a lone farm property with 3 other steamers in Clarksburg, California.
I'm good friends with the CMO of the Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad, Mr. Stathi Pappas who just run his 1909 porter 0-4-0T after a 7 year long complete rebuild! Mr. Pappas is very involved with helping me achieve my goal one step at a time. He even found me 2 photos of the Folsom 1 with her saddle tank on!
For a while I only had 3 photos of the #1 in her halfway disassembled condition to work with. I know almost all the history behind the locomotive but what I've been trying to find, is photos of the locomotive during and after its service life. And now I've got much more! It's a daily process, in the last 2 days alone I've emailed about 5 people who I've been told or who I know have or had some type of connection to the locomotive.
I even emailed the Folsom Prison regarding historic photos of the railroad
Here's what I've got so far.

Here's the bronze photo that Mr. Pappas found for me. It's the best I've got so far of it in complete condition. Seen here in 1962 at the Henry J Kaiser Rock Quarry in Oroville, California.

Another photo Mr. Pappas found from the same time as the first one^ a more front view taken in Oroville in 1962.

This one was taken in 1993 in the engine house at Silverbend Farms, Clarksburg, California.

This one taken by John Barnhill in 2011 of the Folsom 1 moved into some type of shed. Still in CLarksburg

Now time to show my HO models progress.
It's a huge mix match of parts and creativity. The cylinder casting is off an AHM A-3 0-4-0, the valve sear covers I made out of wood, the tops of them are from a Bachmann SPectrum 0-6-0T, the main frame is from a Mantua 0-4-0T Booster, the drivers are from a booster, the valve guides are from an MDC-Roundhouse 2-6-0, the front and rear footboards are from a Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0
Paul, (NCshortlines) is building the new aluminum boiler. Presently I'm getting the saddle tank and oil bunker ready for the day the boiler arrives, which won't be just yet.
Main rods are under construction and those will be Roundhouse 2-6-0 crossheads, and mantua booster rods.
Motor will likely be the old open pole Mantua motor, but I do have plenty others to choose from.

This is what I started with. I built the cylinder casting first and that alone took a couple days of work. Ordered 2 footboards and 2 saddle tanks off Bachmanns parts website, and had 2 MDC-Roundhouse crossheads ready.

I then purchased 2 Mantua boosters. 1 supplied parts to an in house repair project for a friend, and the other helped get the folsom 1 going. This is the scene shortly after removing the pilot beam. The excess was later grinded down and the brackets the valve guides usually hold onto for the mantua booster were also grinded away

after the frame was ready, bearings cleaned and reoiled, drive wheels and rods cleaned, everything was put together to get the frame rolling...literally.

Personally, I think I'd rather change the drivers to old varney ones off the little joe, but for now the Mantua Booster ones work being I'd first have to find a set from someone

The photos above were from the early start of the project in mid October. For a couple weeks I took a break to focus on other projects but as of last week I've been back to work on it and making great strides! Probably because my good friends Stathi found me a photo of the #1 with her saddle tank on and lets just say I got excited...

Part of making this 0-4-0T involves redoing certain parts to make them look like the ones on the real Folsom 1, for this wood was added to the rear beam to make it a bit bigger and more like the prototype

Work also needed to be done to start the cab floor. Sure, you may not see it, but I'm making a cab floor so the cab and oil bunker have no issue being fastened to the rear of the frame

as built the saddle tanks were no or will not be long enough to cover the whole boiler. This is why 2 saddle tanks were purchased, to make 1 good one. Likely, I will purchase a 3rd, to have in case anything goes wrong in building the current one. Also on the flatcar is the oil bunker, yes cut off from the Mantua booster metal shell, is to be shortened (width wise) next.

Now you've seen all the work to date done on the engine. For now the work will focus on 3 things, the Saddle Tank, the Oil Bunker, and the Cab Floor.

If you have any questions or comments at all, go ahead and post them here. Will keep you guys updated as time permits!

I actually like the look without it but my model after test runs will have a saddle tank.
Mine looks odd without a boiler! But I love running gear i.e. frames, wheels, and rods etc so building the frames been fun.
I have another frame so I could build another 0-4-0T of some sorts. One at a time
Folsom 1s my all time favorite steam locomotive and is the locomotive I wish to own in the future.

I had thought about building an HO model of it for some time, I finally came to the decision nthat I would while raking leaves.........odd right?

Yeah Fort Morgan was the hub of displayed 0-4-0T's for a while.
Would need to narrow the gap between the drivers and shorten the frame of say a booster to get the look of a GW 0-4-0T.

I swear I love having good connections in the steam community!
My friend Martin Hansen who literally has a photo of almost every steam locomotive that ever operated on the west coast, mainly logging, mining, shortlines etc. He's been looking for weeks now to find me photos in his huge collection and gave me the "silver photo!" I call it the silver photo because a photo of the #1 while at Folsom PRison would be the "Golden photo." And I'm hoping that's what he finds next

Needless to say, ye ole Hyde can finish his Folsom 1 for sure within the next 2-3 months!

Hyde, that is one nice audacious project. Diving in and making all of those parts from different brands and models work together shows some imagination and determination.

I'm thinking that if you give owning the real thing the same determination you really could just end up owning it.

Thank you sir!
I'm more serious about the real thing then the HO model. The HO model I'm building is just something to have being I don't own the real thing.

I've raised a lot of awareness about the project, got many involved on it, started a Facebook page for it a couple weeks back and after 2 years I finally now have the owners phone number. When I feel ready, I'll leave him a message saying who I am and that I'm very much interested in the history of the real #1. I will NOT mention my goal to own the locomotive.
I know roughly all the locomotives history and have the most photos of it all together then anyone else. However I will let him tell me about the engine and just show my high interest in it.
This will build my relationship with the man and put me in good position to own the real locomotive later on.

Le cab floor is finished! Little weekend project. Minus paint of course. Ever work with wood that small? Yeah, wouldn't recommend it.......Took about two days to do the exterior wood seen but persistence pays off! Floor is all smooth and level after being filed down.

The oil bunker has been finished and painted and will be installed any day now.
The brace for the valve guides is likely the next project.

I have a PDF article on the entire history of the Folsom Prison Railroad. Myself and a member of the California State Railroad Museum put it all together. Very fascinating.

I'm not aware of what remains if anything. I've tried emailing Folsom Prison but never got a response likely for obvious reason considering it's not like their a museum.

The #1 is the only surviving engine from the State Prison. Was also the 3rd #1. Folsom had a lot of steam locomotives in its days as a prison.

Well ever since I got this somewhat recent side shot of the #1 it's wider wheel spacing compared to my model kept bugging me........

So I cut the frame in half and cut and added a filament to give accurate wheel spacing. This was just this past Friday and thought well I ought to get started on the motor and motor mount. So I got that all ready, then decided to build the idler gear assembly from scratch, then put it all in place, used 2 wires connected to a controller, touched 2 parts of the motor to power it, everything connected and worked great! Meaning the motor is good, idler gear is good, and custom built front drive wheel axle is good! Not bad for a days work.

So then the next day I went to work finding 2 good contact plates to use on both sides of the drive wheels so she can be track powered of course. Pulled 2 out of a junked Atlas GP40, and have some wires set aside. Will likely get that all together maybe tomorrow.

contact plates are in top of the finished oil bunker.

Well I did wire up the athearn motor to the Atlas contact plates and she ran!
Had some troubles with the idler gear assembly I built so I took it out and made modifications. It's ready to go back in.
The Atlas contact plates work well!
Will get the idler gear assembly back in place hopefully this weekend and see if she runs better. Ran flawlessly in reverse but forward she needed some improvement. Hopefully the improvements on the idler gear assembly help it!

I have to say, when I read that you have intentions to own the real thing, I thought "boy, I sure hope he knows what he's getting into." Then I thought, "hey, maybe he should talk to the guy up at MRSR..." and then I read the next line. Looks like you already know him! I haven't met himself, but would love to sometime. I'm also active in rail preservation, and am in the same neck of the woods as MRSR.

Yeah, known ol Stathi for a year now, a truly great friend.
Also have another great friend, John Manley who owns the Southern PAcific 2-8-0 #2706 in Colusa, California.
Also know Skip Leicter who owns the Saginaw Timber 2-8-2 #2 in North Freedom, Wisconsin.

All great friends who I've talked to non stop since I got in contact with them. They know who I am, and what my dream is. What they are doing is educating me on how to get there and achieve my dream one step at a time.

Time will tell, have made my plans, and banded those I know will help with me and together we'll make something happen.

PArts arrived from Bachmman, and I went to work!

The rear beam is now finished. New footboard, mounted oil bunker, and built a coupling pin handrail and installed it.

Work has also started on the cab!

#1 inside her home. the cylinder casting on top of the #1's is just to keep the engine grounded. More weight is concentrated towards the rear due to the oil bunker.

Tis all for now!

Got the parts Revell 0-6-0T last week and got a new Dremel rotary tool with about 8 cut off wheels I purchased separately from MicroMark.

For the last 2 days I've cut off the 2 domes, rear cab support, headlight, filler cap, fireman side walkway and every added details such as handrail spokes, and steps. Trying to keep as many rivets as possible but will add rivets for ones I've removed.

What's left is to remove the engineer side walkway and level it out as well as finish leveling the Fireman side. Then I can fill holes, add my new hardware for the tank, then prime/paint it.

Most unique piece. I heard a story, and I believe it was related to Folsom Prison, in which two inmates concealed themselves in the water tanks flanking the boiler. They were caught before the engine left the perimeter.

Clearly, though, the escape was not made using this model of switcher, as you say it is an "oil bunker." How interesting, I never knew of such a design!

In 1920, 3 convicts hijacked a steam locomotive and smashed through the gate and escaped.

Folsom Prison #! is a 1926 Alco 0-4-0T That arrived on November 12th, 1926. Was not her.
Folsom had around 5 other steam locomotives over its run from 1860's to 1920's. Alco #1 was the last steam locomotive purchased, and the last steamer at Folsom.

More or less I used the Revell Omaha because it's tank was pretty much like the Folsoms, it made it so I didn't have to construct anything from scratch though with all the cutting and reshaping I'm doing it's almost like I'm building it from scratch.

As of recently I've finished cutting and leveling the fireman side of the saddle tank. What's left is to remove the engineer side walkway and level it out. Then I have to fill holes, and start adding my new hardware.

I also am keeping her active by running gear around, letting her put together trains and such. She's a fun engine to run.

Did a hell of a lot of things recently. I cut the rear deck off and shortened the rear of the frame to bring the cab closer to the rear drive wheel to make it more prototypically accurate. Also have gotten VERY far along on the cab, filled the two holes in the saddle tank from the domes that were cut off and so forth.

front wall of the cab added, side wall repaired

second doorway beam added

3rd beam added

Side note the cab may look "bad" because I still have to do more filing and sanding. Once it's painted it will look great.

Is this scratchbuild ever going to continue? Is hyde still alive? Is hyde kovacaste now? I'm so confused. But I do know one thing - I'm dying to see the completed Folsom Prison #1!

Unfortunately, Hyde likely quit model railroading about 3 years ago. I can't confirm that he has, however, his Youtube Channel where he used to post often, "The Deputation", hasen't been running in 3 years and the last video was called "SCVR: The Final Goodbye". I was a huge fan of his work, and was sad to see him go. He has been focusing on his machinist job, which takes the space of the old layout. However, he DID say he's keeping all his trains, so who knows?
I hope he replies to this, giving us an update!

If I can't fix it, I can fix it so it can't be fixed.
