I got a mint-in-wrong-box varney 40' boxcar from the 50's, never run. It looks so pristine in EJ&E green that I can't justify messing with it or converting it to kadees. After all, it has something I never saw before, not even on this generation of varney rolling stock - CAST METAL horn hooks! I'll be damned if I ever saw THAT before... anyone know more? They obviously came with it but I'd be interested to know when and why someone decided to take the time to cast horn-hooks instead of just molding plastic ones.

| It might be a Roundhouse car in a Varney box. Roundhouse metal cars came with metal horn hook couplers. What is the number on the car?

EJ&E #60900. It has varney trucks and was in a box for a matching EJ&E green gondola. The only markings on the bottom are "FB-101".

Aha. Thanks! They're still neat couplers though.

MDC cars are relatively easy to ID as they're all cast metal and the paint on roof/ends/doors should differ, only the sides came painted.
I'm not 100% positive but there's a short period between the metal bodies and their own plastic bodies where they sold kits using their metal underframes and Athearn body shells.

Good to know. On this one, the roof and ends are perfectly, exactly matched, but I do have a 40' gondola of the same generation that was so badly paintmatched and flaking I had to strip the ends and repaint them.

I think, I have about a handful of these old Metal Horn Hooks from I believe MDC Roundhouse!!!! mine, are brand new, never used, so are still un painted bare metal!
Possible that they would need springs as I'm not sure, I have those.....

| I just bought a few wood/metal oldies, either Globe or Athearn mostly and a few have metal horn-hooks on them.
