This here is a strange one.
It's what appears to have been the track from an Atlas set. It's 6 curves, a terminal straight and a rerailer-crossing sections. The oddity?
It's 12" radius curves.
That's right. 12 inch radius curves, by Atlas. It's not some knockoff either; it matches all my other Atlas track and has the same feel and hardness of Atlas' plastic. So when did Atlas make 12" radius curves, how come they don't offer it or even talk about it (ever) in publications or MR articles.
Most importantly, how can I use it if I've only got 6 sections? I'm thinking of a traction railway for my dorm and these would make a fine size for a sectional curve, but perhaps this is too special to use?

You sure that's 12 inch radius? And not 15? I know that Atlas made and still makes 15 inch radius curves, and the older stuff, could have the "5" looking like a "2".....I am assuming this is HO scale not N scale as the N scale stuff is 11 inch radius.

Yep it is 12 inch Atlas track.

Can't find anything on it.

John, That's insane! I can not imagine what was sold to have ran on something so tight in radius! I mean really, a Gandy Dancer? Possible the DeWitt Clinton? And the John Bull but.. anything else? That would LOOK right?

Looks good? Overhang? OVERHANG!?!
Tell it to the chief engineer, but this curve's lookin' pretty darn sharp!

That is a 40' athearn boxcar and a 50' athearn gondola (next week's cars of the week). They do couple together, and they do have adequate clearance in their underbodies to take an even sharper curve. You have to realize the kind of things 40' cars could do...
For instance in this picture; one of the famous "Bronx River Pocket Terminals". http://www.bronx-terminal.com/wp-content/uploads/bronxxlarge.jpg
EM-1, I'm absolutely sure it's standard HO scale 1:89 (with the track that's really 5' gauge). It's most certainly not a 15" radius curve; I measured it with 2 rulers and you can clearly see that's a 2 not a 5. It's factory stock, and I've never seen it before either. In all my reading, internet searches, dumpster diving and flea-marketing, I've never seen any 12" radius curves. I mean, I've seen sharp curves like that for Markilin and with little junk sets.
Junk sets... wait a second... who's that guy who posted a 3 car shortie set a few months ago? There was a set with standard HO track that looked like it was this kind of tiny radius. Could that be it?

Eldon trains had tight radius track. Who made it?

My AOTW are 2 Hopper Car Unloading Sets . A red box and brown box. These are recent swap meet purchases. Both boxes are rough but seem to be complete and unused. Don't have the coal loads .

Whatever load you use should have a fairly rounded-shaped particle. I've tried these with coal I crushed, myself. It jammed the hopper doors open. There used to be a product called "egg coal" that worked reasonably well, but I haven't seen that in a while and it might be discontinued. Anyway, if you try something and the doors don't close when you leave the dump track, the cars aren't defective. Just try another, less gritty, kind of load.

| Hey Tony, What length of track do you need to accomplish the grade to that coal trestle? That's pretty cool. Thanks. Barry

Hi Barry, The sets use 2 - 9 inch track then a 6 inch actuator track and a 9 inch track. What is interesting is that the red box set uses a 9 inch concave, a 9 inch convex , a 6 inch actuator ,then a 9 inch straight all made by ATLAS. The brown box uses 3 -9 inch straight track by TYCO and a 6 inch actuator track by ATLAS. Thanks Tony

| Hey Tony, What is the "concave" and "convex" track; I'm ignorant about that.

I figured it out.
The track must be from an Eldon "Little Big Train" setup.
They had HO track with sharp curves for HO trains that were as wide as they were long. For more information, search for it on this forum as someone had posted about that earlier.

Hi Barry, Have a close look at the photos I took of the red box and brown box instructions sheets. You can see in the red box instructions that the first track is concave and the second is convex. The actual tracks in that set are bent . Thanks Tony

| Ah . . . I'd like to see that hopper set in operation. Kind of like a roller coaster for the hopper car, hey?
