A couple months ago I found an old 1943 AAR rulebook on the handling and repair of freight cars (which, coincidentally, is the one thing I'm good at in the modeling world), along with a blank pad of Form 118 train orders. I have been reading that rulebook and just getting more and more convinced that I am probably the only teenager in the country who would actually read it for fun. Not to mention a loser Ah well...

Hey, everybody has different interests, not every teenager wants to play guitar or the drums, be a surfer dude, or be the Techie guy. Sometimes just enjoying "old knowledge" is fun in and of itself. You never know what you may learn now that will help you later. I love reading about geology ( rocks and minerals ), glass making, space, undersea, all sorts of things. I went to a big Radio flea market one year, and found a guy had a table full of railroadiana like 1950's rulebooks for C&O , etc. I wound up buying about 7 or 8 of those booklets, not like the knowledge hasn't been surpassed, but it's fun to read what the rules were back then. Don't stop enjoying and exploring knowledge, no matter how old, long as you enjoy it, it's fine.
Jerry 53 and still plays with trains. :)

Like what you like, there are no rules. I'm probably only a few years older than you and here I am collecting toy trains that were made in the 60's.

I'd like to know where all these teenage drummers you speak of were when I was in high school. There's only so many guitarists you can have per band....

No, losers are the ones who become famous for a sex tape or a substance abuse problem, or flaunt their daddy issues for all the world to see. (Listening, Miley?)
This is one of the saddest commentaries on our culture that I can think of. I don't know why ignorance and downright debauchery became cool (or why being 'cool' became the ultimate goal, even for many adults), but I do know I came of age in the thick of it. Intelligence used to be admired. Maybe we're seeing the beginnings of a backlash with geek culture, but a lot of that seems to be about escapism.
Don't worry about those who seem to be having a lot more fun than you, because I can guarantee they're not, and I'm sure there are many more your age who feel the same.
Read up and enjoy.

The problem with drums is, there's 4 or 5 of them, they take up lots of space, and I imagine that a set costs more than a reasonably priced guitar. AND they make lots of noise, so parents tend not to get them for their kids. You can play a guitar by itself solo and make good music to listen to or sing by, with drums you really can't. Who listens to drum solos anyway? So while it seemed cool in my generation to also want to be a drummer, realistically, it was a more specialized occupation that few got into, due to cost and space limitations.

I suppose "wants to" were the key words in your initial post.......
You make a good point though. Guitar is more fun on its own. I *think* you can buy a starter drum kit for $500 or so. A Squier Bullet will run you about $100. I wonder what a good dubstep machine costs these days!
