There is some Civil War train history in Callahan,FL west of me by 15 miles. Apparently, a car or 2 of supplies were burnt down and the buried! One day, a fellow on a backhoe tractor digging found a pair of wheel sets by accident! He donated them to the West Nassua Historical Society. After some research, those wheel sets were part of the remains of the destroyed cars! They're benches now. Then, there was the Sherman Necktie. The rails were piled on top of ties, set a fire and once the rails were red hot, they were wrapped around the bases of trees in the surrounding woods all twisted up! I've been told if ever found, they're illegal to keep for some silly reason. I ever find one, I'm keeping it with the tree!

Rail was 39' long...might find it a bit difficult to tuck away 'til you got it home...

Looks like the clean-up has begun, though. The turntable appears to be operational

It amazes me that we have such clear photos from that time. You can find great shots like this on Shorpy, where it's easy to lose a couple of hours. Interesting to see the American on the turntable with the outside frame just like the original General.
I'm trying to figure out the loco in the foreground. It looks like an American type, but all that's visible is one set of wheels on the lead truck. It looks like the cylinder jacket is unwrapped and hanging, so it's probably blocking our view of the front set.
Then there's the tender wheels with no outside journals, and the spoked rearmost set. The tender is so short that the brake beam protrudes beyond the rear of the frame.
Those primitive iron boilers were weak, with an ever-present danger of explosion.

It's a site with tons of high quality historical photographs. The quality of those old B&W glass negatives is amazing.
Here's the railroad category: http://www.shorpy.com/search/node/railroads
And the Kodachrome category, which features tons of WWII railroad and aviation photos, particularly the work of Jack Delano: http://www.shorpy.com/Large_Format_Kodachromes
Like I said, be prepared not to get anything done.

Nelson, Thanks for the links. The photos are wonderful. Many are large format and so detailed. I model the WWII era and the color photos are great. I enjoy the railroad pictures, but the quality of the character photos gives a life to that period. Again thanks for the links.

John, you're welcome. That's one of Delano's photos, and it stood out for me, too. Mr. Logan's face is etched with a thousand words... he worked hard in a way few of us can imagine today.
