Todays show : Well the place was packed with people, and it is a big place. Lots of trains, and you can find Ho scale there. On a whole prices were higher. There were some buys. I didn't get much. I meet Nelson there. And lost Nelson there. All you need to do is turn around. Gone! I hope he got a few buys. I am sure he will report or tell me of his finds. On my way home, I arranged to pass the Merchant Square Mall. It is a site of the other train shows. They have 4 or 5 a year their. It is a building full of antique dealers and a source of HO trains for me. More than half of what I got today came from the dealers there. In my list I"ll pit a A for the Allentown show today and a M for the Mall. I am always looking for Marx, gilbert, Varney, Fleuschmann, and other old stuff. It matches me, OLD. I just noticed that Pete just beat my post of the show by .42 seconds. He was there and I didn't see him. it is a big place.

Frank, I didn't know where you guys went! You got ahead of me... I think. like you said, the place is huge, and I had more luck in the second room, but I didn't get completely through it by the time they were closing. Too much time chatting with people and browsing through parts bins. Oh well, I was pretty tapped out cash-wise by that point anyway.
The best buy of the day was a brand new NWSL Puller III for $15! I couldn't believe it when the dealer quoted me the price; I thought I'd heard wrong. I also bought 2 Rivarossi boiler fronts from from him: one for the Consolidation, and the other for the Espee Atlantic. I got them cheap in a group of parts I picked out, so I don't think he knew what they were.
Most of the stuff was tinplate and HO prices were stupid high, so most of my purchases were parts. Two highlights were a a very nice Tyco RCA industrial switcher for $17, and a Lionel - Rivarossi Wabash C-Liner B unit with flawless paint for $25.
I also got a Riv U25C dummy in Conrail custom paint. I just bought it for the fuel tank casting, but the paint job is pretty good aside from a somewhat crooked logo on one side (which actually may be more prototypical ). The guy was asking $10, but I offered him $5 and he accepted. I didn't pay the asking price for anything except the Puller.

Nelson ; Well getting separated just happened. Not intended. It took you awhile but you got the fuel tank. What road name will the U25 be? I remember a dealer having 3 or 4 trays of North West short line packaged products under his table. He had a corner table on a inside crossing isle in the second hall where you got later on. He had a few shelves on his table and many packaged parts, from different manufactures, were in trays on them. My friend Bob got some things from him. I got a brass air tank to pilot mount on the other PRR N1 I will put together. The tank that came with the Cary N1 body kit is too small. Well it would seem that we both missed meeting Pete. We all seemed to have a good day. frank

Maybe someone else can confirm but I believe it's $65/table and that covers both days.

If you think about it you'll know why the dealers there sell older cars for 6 and 7 dollars each. Often people feel that the price is to high. The higher prices for tables reflect in higher prices for items on the tables. Many times at shows very little is sold. Money wise you don't break out even. A lot of people come to train shows to walk around, see the trains and remember. Families come with there little ones. They came for the day to get out and walk around together. They look at the old cars open in the trays or laying on the tables. Always say the same thing. " You can pick out one." It is neat when they are little and can just look above the edge of the table. They take so long deciding. That's OK! It's what little people do. The parents are often bent over looking at the trains at the same level as the child. The fathers saying thing about the car, and the mothers the colors and how they look. The child is listing, learning, and sharing a time with their parents that doesn't come around often in life. I am lucky enough to join in that. The decision is made, a parent has given me 3 or 4 dollars. The child wont let go of the car. I am offering a bag to carry it in. The I tell them about the short person discount. I say he has to pick out 2 more cars, and they are free. Small eyes light up, some time even in the big people. Here we go again, and it all repeats. I really enjoy those times. Its a hobby, playing, done best when shared. frank

Frank, the dealer I bought the puller from had tons of detail parts, so I think he was the same one you mentioned. The U25C is painted pretty nicely in Conrail.
Cute story about kids that come to your table. I'll kneel and wear a beanie next time.

I was there Saturday around noon. It seemed a more crowded than usual. It was hard to get past all those guys gawking at O & S scale stuff to look at the important (HO) stuff.
Prices did seem a bit higher this go-round. I got a couple interesting cars @ 2/$5 and sprung for a Macy's box car @ $10 because I've never seen one. When I get home from work I'll have to post a couple pix. I only spent about $25. But, I agree that looking around is part of the fun.
It's always cool to see stuff that you never even imagined anyone ever made! How simple the world was when Lionel made those glowing radio-active train loads and the glowing track-side nuclear reactor!
I hope this isn't anyone here - It's just a comment, not an insult. - Then there's the guy who always has the first table on the right as you go into the second room. He sells? cars for like $10-$15 that I've bought at other shows for $2-$3. Yet on the other hand, he has parts for cheap. I bought 6 good Life Like trucks with working couplers for $5 which is better than buying $1-$2 broken cars for parts. I guess that's where he makes his money.
My wife and I make a day of it. First we hit the train show. Then we eat at the Amish food market across the parking lot. Next stop is Ollies (a close-out type store) and Harbor Freight in Allentown. Then we finish up at the casino in Bethlehem for a while before we head back to NJ.

Did anyone spot a vendor with an assortment of old Penn Line and other metal Pennsy steam? Real old guy, says he's just clearing out his collection? I met him at a local show and he said he'd be there.

Here's my three cars from First Frost:

The Food Club and World Classics are AHM/IHC "Made in Slovenia".
There's no markings on the Macy's car and I don't recognize the mold. The bottom rail for the sliding door (black) is part of the car floor, not part of the body.
